JESUS SPEAKS
Understanding the Teaching of JesusINTRODUCTION
Martin Luther says that the gospel is nothing else but a story, a narrative about Jesus Christ. This story tells who Jesus is, what Jesus said, what he did and how he suffered. And Luther adds that one person describes it one way, someone else another way. “Jesus Speaks” is another attempt to tell the story of Jesus so that we may understand, value and live by his words!
I believe that the holy Scriptures are divinely inspired. No one can improve on the Word of God. Nor do we wish to! But we also know that Jesus informed the disciples that they would receive the Holy Spirit, who “will guide you into all truth.” [Jn.16:12] It would be an exaggeration to assert that all Christianity since the first century has been under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. But surely many books that have been written and millions of sermons preached through the centuries, proclaim the good news under the influence of the Spirit. It is my hope that “Jesus Speaks” follows in that tradition.
I have worked from several translations in this book, but most of all I have used The New International Version [TNIV]. I have also followed the gospel of Matthew in preparing a simple and helpful summation of the Lord’s teaching.
At the beginning of every chapter is a reference to the chapters from the gospel of Matthew. The narrative is written in paragraph style without numbering verses in the text.
If this book sends you back to the Bible to read more of what Jesus taught, well and good! My hope is that you will be moved to search the Scriptures which will bring you to Jesus, since he made it clear that the Scriptures testify about him! [See John 5:39]
For years I have reached out to people inside and outside of the church, people who have questions and doubts and who want to know the truth. That is probably because I was a skeptic before I became a Christian. I studied other religions before I was willing to investigate Christianity, but when I did so, it was Jesus Christ who made the difference for me. Jesus continues to be the center of my faith and hope. Who Jesus is, what he teaches and what he accomplished through his life, death and resurrection is the heart of the Christian faith.
It is my hope that anyone who reads “Jesus Speaks,” whether Christian or skeptic or seeker or anything else, will come to believe in Jesus, who explains his coming into the world like this: “The Father who sent me is trustworthy, and what I have heard from him, I tell the world.“ (John 8:26) What did Jesus tell the world? And what did Jesus intend to convey to us through his words? This is what “Jesus Speaks” is all about, and I hope you will approach it thoughtfully, humbly and sincerely.
The gospel writers tell us that Jesus brings the grace of God and that he himself is life, light and truth. The scriptures affirm that Jesus promises the good news of salvation, forgiveness and redemption for all. May you discover through his words that truth and light, and so may you discover the love which will direct you to the narrow way which leads to the eternal kingdom. All this [and more] can be found in the words of Jesus Christ.
This book can change your life! As Jesus promised: “Ask and it will be given you. Seek and you will find…For everyone who asks receives; those who seek, find!“ [Mt.7:7]
----------------------------------------------
Jesus speaks is based on the teaching of Jesus from the gospel of Matthew. This teaching is introduced by the Sermon on the Mount [Matthew, chapters five, six and seven]. That is why I begin with the gospel, since our focus is always on the words of Jesus. Probably over 90% of Matthew’s gospel is in “Jesus Speaks,” as well as a sprinkling of his teaching from the other gospels. I've added a few quotes from Luke and John. Obviously, there is far more teaching than is contained here but a few seemed helpful to be included.

BEGINNINGS: BAPTISM, TEMPTATION AND CAPERNAUM
Matthew 3 and 4
It all began when a prophet called “John the Baptist” appeared at the Jordan river. He preached repentance and announced the kingdom of God. He offered to baptize all those who were willing to confess their sins, and people came to him from many parts of Israel.
When they asked him who he was and why he was doing this, John quoted the prophet Isaiah and claimed that he had come “to prepare the way of the Lord.” He was cleansing people with water, he explained, but he also told them that someone greater than he would come, who would purify them with the Holy Spirit and fire!
Then Jesus walked to the Jordan river and asked John to consecrate him in water. “I can’t do that,” John said. “It should be the other way around. You ought to consecrate me.”
“No,” answered Jesus, “I am asking you to baptize me.”
“But you are greater than I am. You are more powerful. You are the Holy One of God. I am unworthy even to carry your sandals.”
“The Lord has called you to this ministry. So this is how it must be. You must do the will of God and fulfill your calling. This means, baptize me.”
When Jesus emerged from the water, the Spirit of God descended on him, and a dove came to rest on his shoulder. Suddenly everyone looked up! A voice spoke from heaven: “This is my beloved Son with whom I am well pleased!”
Jesus did not remain at the Jordan after his baptism. He was immediately led into the wilderness by the Spirit, where he fasted for forty days and nights. He was feeling very hungry and weak physically, when Satan appeared on the scene, seized the advantage and began to test Jesus.
“Since you are the Son of God,” the tempter began, “you can do anything you want. Surely you are aware of this, aren’t you? For example, you can turn these stones into bread. Why don’t you do that? There is nothing wrong with responding to your needs. You don’t have to suffer from hunger any longer.”
Jesus was up to the challenge. “Yes, I can do that, but there is more to life than food. It is written, people do not live on bread alone but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.”
Having failed once, the Devil tried another approach: “Imagine that we are in the holy city, and you are standing on the highest point of the temple. Now, since you are the Son of God, why don’t you throw yourself down in front of the people? You will not be harmed, you know. You can get up and walk away. Then everyone will see the miracle and believe in you. And since you quoted from Scripture, I will do the same. As it says in the Psalms: ‘God will command his angels to lift you up in their hands, so that you won’t fall. You will not even strike your foot against a stone.’”
And Jesus answered, “Yes, I know that scripture, but you have lifted it out of context. Besides, it is also written, ‘you are not to put the Lord your God to the test.’ I will not test the Almighty. I only do what my Father wants.”
Then, once more Satan tempted Jesus. “Let me show you something,” he said, as they reached the top of a mountain. “From here you can see all the nations of the world. Look in every direction. Use your imagination. This is why you have come to earth, isn’t it? To save people and to reign over all? I will give you the whole world! Yes, I will. It is everything you yearn for. All I ask of you is to bow down and worship me. Right now. Right here.”
Each temptation was potent, but this one was like an arrow aimed at the heart, because Jesus has come to save the world. But not the Tempter’s way. In the strength of the Spirit, Jesus answered: “Go away from me, Satan. Leave me! I worship only the Lord God. I will not worship anything else. For it is written, you are to worship the Lord and him only you are to serve.”
Then the devil left him. Angels came to strengthen him. And now his ministry was to begin. He left Nazareth and moved to Capernaum. He began preaching the good news of the kingdom of God. He also invited some of his followers to become his disciples. The brothers Peter and Andrew, and the sons of Zebedee, James and John, were among the first.
Jesus demonstrated the power to heal people, and the news soon spread all over Israel. They came from everywhere to him, not only from Galilee, but from as far away as Jerusalem and Judea.
And that’s how it all began.
THE SERMON ON THE MOUNT
Matthew 5-7, chapter 5
One day, as Jesus saw the large crowds coming from everywhere, he went up a mountainside and sat down. He motioned for the people to sit down also. With his disciples around him he began his teaching to all who had come to hear him. This is what he said:
I bring you good news: the kingdom of God is here! Repent of your sins, and believe the good news. Happy are those who do believe, for they belong to the kingdom of God! I will tell you why. Because you are blessed of God, that is why. Rejoice and be glad, for you are the favored, the chosen!
The people of the kingdom are not those whom you suppose. They are not the rich and famous of the world, but the poor in spirit. Yes, you heard me right. Perhaps you think that those who are prosperous and successful are truly the blessed ones. That is not true. God takes notice of those who are spiritually impoverished. They are close to him. Why is this so? Because these poor are aware that they do not have the Spirit of God. They are conscious of their needs. Because they are unfulfilled they seek the Lord, and those who seek will find. Yes, the poor in spirit are favored by the Father. They can be happy because they belong to the kingdom of God!
Do you think that people who live constantly for gratification, who want always to enjoy good times are happy? To the contrary. The happy ones are those who accept life’s tests and are willing to suffer. That is because their problems lead them to God. Happy are they who grieve for their sins and for the sins of the world, for they will be comforted. Have you not heard that God is close to the broken hearted?
Perhaps you also believe that landlords who own the land and large properties have achieved success. I tell you otherwise. Happy are the meek for they will inherit the earth. I know it doesn’t look like that right now, but the heavenly Father does not favor the proud and powerful who own all the prized real estate. I tell you that the humble will be blessed for they will inherit the whole world.
Happy are also those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be satisfied. When people rely on their deeds and works and think they are good enough for the kingdom, they become self-righteous. But self-righteousness is of no value whatever in the kingdom, because those people have no need for anything else. That is why those who hunger for God’s righteousness are the only ones who will be rewarded in the long run.
Happy are those people who do not harbor resentments nor do they plot to get even. They are the ones who forgive others. They do not expect to revenge themselves. They live in the mercy of God and because they are merciful they will be blessed by the God of mercy. If you are not merciful even though you know in your heart it is the right thing to do, you will never receive the everlasting mercy.
Only those whose hearts have been purified, who chose to draw close to God will see God. Isn’t it obvious that they will be truly favored? How can you see God if your heart is not pure?
Happy are the peacemakers, not the troublemakers. The troublemakers will be rejected. The peacemakers will be called the children of God, because God is the God of peace.
But all these people who are so blessed to belong to the kingdom, will also suffer persecution for righteousness’ sake. For all the anguish and pain in the world they will be rewarded, just as the prophets who lived before you endured adversity and horrendous evils. Great will be your reward when you are willing to identify yourself with me. When you follow me in spite of the hostility you can expect to receive in the world, you will not be overlooked nor will you be eternally forgotten.
You, who belong to the kingdom, are the children of the Father. You are the salt of the earth! Do you know how necessary and valuable salt is? Of course you do. Fishermen pack their catch in a barrel of salt so they can sell fresh fish in the marketplace. Salt preserves and keeps food from spoiling by making contact. Salting has to bite. But if your salt is mixed with sand or dirt it is good for nothing. Then you have to throw it away. That must never happen to you, because you are called upon to salt the whole world!
You are also the light of the world. Darkness surrounds you everywhere, but the only light of the world are the people of the kingdom. You can always see a city on a hill, and that is what you are. That brightness cannot be hidden. So also when you light a candle you don’t put it under a bed, but on a candlestick, and it lights up the house. Therefore let your light shine in the dark world, let your faith be shown by doing good works. That is how you are to glorify God, but don’t call attention to yourself!
I know what some of you may be thinking: ‘Is this a new teaching? Is he being true to the holy law of God?’ I will speak plainly to you. Do not think that I have come to abolish the law and the prophets. Nothing of the sort. I am not here to destroy what God gave to the people. But I have come to fulfill the law, yes, to complete it. And the fulfillment of the law and prophecy means that something new is here. That is why I announce the kingdom of God to you.
The day will come that heaven and earth will pass away, but until that happens not the crossing of a “T” or the dotting of an “I” will disappear, not until everything has been accomplished. So, be sure that you teach as well as practice these commandments and you will be great in the kingdom. Even if you keep the least of these and teach people so, you will become least in the kingdom.
I am also here to fill the law full of meaning, to help you to understand the implications of the commandments of God. I warn you that fulfilling the law means far more than what your religious leaders are teaching you by their example. You will never, not ever, enter the kingdom of God unless your righteousness surpasses that of the spiritual leaders who are your teachers.
Unless you hunger and thirst for righteousness, unless you become meek and merciful and pure in heart you will not see God.
Now listen carefully. I am about to teach you the meaning of the commandments of God.
Surely you have heard the words, “You shall not kill.” Do not think that you have observed this law because you have never killed anybody. Where does murder begin? It originates within, in the heart. If your heart is consumed with hatred or revenge, you are already a murderer! When you intend to get even with someone, that intention poisons the mind. You are in danger of the judgment because you have broken the commandment in thought if not in deed. When you curse someone you already despise them. Don’t you realize you are at risk of hell fire when you call someone a fool or use any other words that bring that person down? Your heart is no longer pure, and God who searches the hearts knows your innermost thoughts.
Now if you are going to worship the Lord in the holy place, and you remember that someone has something against you, leave your gift there by the altar and walk out of the house of God. First become reconciled with that person, and then return and offer your gift to God with a clean heart.
Agree quickly with anyone who holds anything against you, for if your adversary takes you to court, the judge will sentence you. Then the judge will hand you over to the warden, and the warden will lock you up in prison. I tell you, you will not be released until you have paid everything you owe, even to the very last penny.
You have also heard the commandment: “Do not commit adultery.” Do you think you are only guilty when you commit a physical act? Not so. Adultery begins in your eyes, it enters the mind and fills the heart. Even though you have not acted, you may be looking with passion at a person of the opposite sex. Don’t you see that your desire has already nullified the commandment? Adulterous thoughts are not in harmony with God’s perfect law. You are no longer pure, are you?
So, how can you control your desires? You will need to stop tempting thoughts the moment they arise. You must become resolute and firm about this. If your eye offends you, pluck it out and throw it away! Yes, it is better to enter heaven with one eye than to preserve your whole body to be thrown into hell. Be ruthless in the same way with an offending hand. Cut off even your right hand! You will enter heaven with only one hand but you will avoid being tossed into hell with all your body parts.
If, however, you decide to interpret these words literally, then everyone will become blind and lame and will be without many body parts. I do not expect you to cripple and deform yourself, but I insist that you take my teaching seriously. This means, be strong as you battle every temptation that assaults you. Satan is determined to destroy you! I, too, have experienced the power of his temptations, and I have won the victory over the flesh. This is possible for you by the presence of the Holy Spirit and a firm trust in God.
You have heard people say that if a man wants to divorce his wife, all he needs is an official document, just a piece of paper. But you need to realize that divorce begins in the mind. Do not consider becoming free from your partner when you are married. Divorce is not an option unless you are betrayed and promises are broken. Anyone who divorces another unless it is for unfaithfulness, causes that spouse to commit adultery. You may ask, then why did Moses permit people to divorce? That was because your hearts are hard. But it was not so from the beginning. When God created man and woman in the garden, it is written: ’Whom therefore God has joined together let no one separate.’
You have heard that it was said long ago, when you take an oath, do not make a vow if you don’t plan to keep it. Promises are to be made and kept before God. I tell you it is not right to swear by heaven or by the earth because both heaven and earth belong to God. So also Jerusalem is the city of the great king. Don’t even swear by your head because you cannot really change the color of your hair. You may think you can, but your hair still grows out from the roots, and you can’t stop that. Besides, you don’t need to use strong language when you are taking an oath. All you need to say is a simple “yes” or “no.” Anything more than that comes from the evil one.
You have heard that the old law says: “An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth.” I want to show you a better way. Do not resist wickedness. Do not pay back one evil with another. Vengeance is not God’s will. The problem with retaliation is that when you draw even, your enemy will again go one up on you. That is how the cycle accelerates. Those who live like this never stop doing more harm to others than anyone may have done to you.
There is a better way. When someone slaps you in the face, turn the other cheek. Yes, you heard me right. If someone takes you to court and sues you for your coat, let that person have your shirt as well. If someone forces you to do a dirty job, not only do the job but volunteer to do twice as much. If someone demands to borrow from you, give them what they want and don’t expect anything in return. All this may not produce “results,” but in the long run you will see the effect. You can be sure of this: the kingdom of God will not come through the cycle of evil for evil, but by returning good for bad.
Here is another popular misinterpretation. God commanded you to “love your neighbor.” But somewhere in the past people added something, so that now the saying is: “You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.” This is not the holy law of God.
I declare to you that the command to love includes more, not less: Love your neighbor and love your enemies. Yes, even pray for those who persecute you and misuse you. I know what that sounds like. You may think that this is impossible to do, but it is God’s way. You object that it is out of the question to love your enemies? It will never work? Not necessarily. Loving your neighbor means more than doing the minimum.
Consider this: when you love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, you become the children of your Father in heaven. Why is this true? Because your Father in heaven makes no distinctions. God causes his sun to rise on the good and on the bad, and does not single out only those who are good. God sends rain on the righteous and rain also falls on the unrighteous. Everyone gets treated equally in God’s creation!
So, if you like those who like you, what reward do you gain? Don’t most people, no matter who they are or what they believe behave in a friendly manner to those who like them? Even big time criminals and street gangs and lawless people who are locked up in prison have this unwritten code: always be true to your own and don’t snitch.
If you only smile and greet friends and family, what are you doing more than anyone else? Pagans and worldly people who don’t want God in their lives behave like that.
What I am saying to you because you are the children of the kingdom can be summed up like this: Be complete even as your Father in heaven is complete. Do not be overwhelmed by what I say. In everything you do and in everything you are, strive to live as those who belong to the kingdom!
That is why I say to you, Happy are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness for they will be satisfied. Happy are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.
Matthew 6
You are the people of the kingdom! You are “the salt of the earth.” You are “the light of the world.” But how are you to witness as salt and light? What are you to do? How can you glorify God by your lives?
Be careful not to perform acts of righteousness in order to be noticed by people. Don’t be a show off and make a spectacle of yourself. When you advertise your goodness, you will not gain any rewards. This is exactly what hypocrites do all the time. They are acting out in front of people, but they’re not really what they profess to be. I assure you that neither they nor you will be rewarded by your Father in heaven when you are not real.
Suppose you want to do something to help the poor. You decide to give a special gift to a charitable cause. Don’t tell everybody about it. Don’t “blow your own horn,” as they say. When you make a big deal about doing good works, people will stop you on the street and tell you how great you are. But you may as well resign yourself, that this is all the reward you will ever receive. And if you write a check, you don’t let your left hand know what your right hand is doing. So when you give anonymously and don’t tell a soul, your Father who notices what is done in secret will surely reward you.
The same holds true for your prayers. Don’t be like those religious show-offs who enjoy standing at the altar or in public places in order to be seen. I tell you they will certainly receive recognition that way. But when you pray to your Father in heaven, go into a room, close the door and pray in secret. Your Father who sees everything, everywhere and always, will reward you. And when you pray don’t repeat the same phrases over and over or mumble words mindlessly like some religious fanatics do. You cannot impress God! You don’t need to act pious. Be real. The fact is that your Father knows what you are and what you want and what you need. He knows - even before you ask him.
Here is how you ought to pray. Speak to God simply as children who belong to their Father, and pray like this:
Our Father who is in Heaven, Hallowed be your Name.
Your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil, for Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.I want to underscore one part of this prayer. It’s about forgiveness. If you forgive others, your Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive and forget, your Father will not forgive you your sins. Therefore, to receive forgiveness, you need to be forgiving.
What I am teaching you about giving and prayer, is also true about discipline and fasting. When you go on a diet, don’t put on a sad face so that people will see that you are denying yourself. That is what hypocrites also do. When people notice your devotion, you can be sure that they will praise you, but I say to you that is the only attention you will get. So when you discipline yourself, you need to brush your hair and wash your face, in order that it will not be obvious that you are on a diet. Your Father who is aware of everything in secret will certainly reward you.
Therefore you need to ask yourself when you do good works or give to the poor or are saying prayers or starting on a diet, are you doing all this for yourself or for God? Are you laying up treasure on earth? Or are you primarily interested in the eternal treasures of heaven? You know what happens to your possessions on the earth, don’t you? Thieves break in and steal your valuables. Your possessions can spoil and decay. Moths will eat everything they can, and rust will destroy everything else.
But it is not so in heaven. Thieves are not allowed to enter heaven and neither will there be moths nor rust. So where do you want your treasure to be? Down here or up there? I will warn you about something else: where your treasure is, there will your heart be also!
Now consider that your eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are focused on one object, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eyes see double, your body will be confused and full of darkness. Have you watched people who have had too much to drink? They cannot walk a straight line. Neither are they able to focus on a single object, because their eyes see two images. If then the light that is in you turns to darkness, how awful is that darkness! Do you really want to live like that?
So listen carefully to what I am about to tell you No one, I mean absolutely no one, is able to serve two masters. No exceptions! I assure you that nobody can satisfy two masters, even though many are convinced that they are the exception to the rule. You may think that you are different, but you are not different. Either you will hate one and love the other, or you will hold to one and despise the other. You cannot lay up treasure in heaven and on earth at the same time, just as it is impossible to be in the light when you are in the dark. You cannot serve both God and money. One, but not both. That is why I advise you to serve God and only God!
Here is a parable for you. This is a story about a rich man who was very successful. He knew how to make money, as people say. The land he owned was very fertile and he had far more crops than he had ever grown before.
“What am I going to do about this?” he asked himself. “I don’t have enough room to store my harvest. I need to consider what to do. Ah, I have a plan. I will tear down my barns and build larger ones to store all my grain. I will not lose anything and I will make far more profit, enough to last me for several years. Then I can live on easy street and really enjoy my life. I can indulge myself in any pleasure I choose, and I will eat and drink and live the good life.“
But God had something to say about this. God said to him, “You fool! This very night your soul will be required of you. Then who will inherit all your treasure, everything that you have arranged for yourself? It will not belong to you.”
And this is how it will be with all those who live for themselves in the world, but are not rich toward God. To become rich toward God - have you ever given that some thought? What do you need to do in order to lay up treasures in heaven?
That is why I say to you that you need to decide whom you will serve. You cannot obey two masters. You cannot follow God and money. But if God is your Lord, you will experience important changes in your life. Yes, you will.
For example, you have certainly observed how worried and concerned some people can be. There is no need for you to be overly anxious about every day necessities. You ought not to lose sleep about what you will eat or drink, or what you are to wear on your body. Is not your life more valuable than the food you eat? Of course it is. Is not your body more important than the clothing you wear? Think about it. Of course it is.
Take a look at the birds of the air. What do you see? Birds do not sow or reap or store food into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. They do not go hungry. Oh yes, they have to find their food. When there are little ones in the nest, the parents fly about, darting busily here and there for their young. And they always manage to find enough to feed them. Yes, birds work, but they do not worry.
Are you not far more valuable than birds? Of course you are! Think about what this means, and you will grow in your faith. Do you realize that God knows when one sparrow which sells for a penny in the market, falls to the ground? God cares for all the animals and all the birds of his creation, but you are the children of God!
What good is all your fret and worry? Can you add a single hour to the days of your life by struggling and straining? To the contrary. Anxiety will produce tension, and that will do more harm than good.
And why are you so concerned about clothing? Take a look at how the flowers grow in the fields. Do they labor or spin? What do they actually accomplish? They are certainly not anxious. And yet I tell you that the rich and glamorous people of the world, who get all dressed up for important occasions never look as beautiful as ordinary lilies in the field. So, if this is how God clothes the flowers in bloom today, which are thrown away tomorrow and burnt in the fire, how much more will God take care of you? Oh, you of little faith, your Father tends his garden and cares for his animals, but you are far more important to him than his creation, because you are his children!
So, don’t worry about all these things. Don’t ask, “What shall we eat?” or “What shall we drink?” or “What shall we wear?” The people of the world are constantly troubled about these necessities, even though they have closets full of clothing and cupboards full of food. Never forget that your heavenly Father knows what your every day needs are.
So, since you cannot serve both God and money, seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness. When you live like that, I promise you that all things that are necessary for your life, will be given to you as well. Yes, your Father will provide. When you believe in your heavenly Father and live with this faith, you will be free of anxiety and worry and over-concern.
One more thing. Don’t be fretful about tomorrow. Tomorrow will have its own cares when it arrives. There’s nothing you can do about tomorrow until it comes anyway, so don’t waste your strength on being over-anxious and phobic. Every day has enough trouble for itself already.
Remember who you are - the children of God.
You are the salt of the earth! You are the light of the world!
Matthew 7
Have you ever noticed how people constantly criticize and judge one another? They not only poison their relationships, but they are setting themselves up for the judgment! What I have to say now is the word of the living God. I want you to hear this truth which can change your life and heal your relationships: judge not that you be not judged! Think about it.
You need to understand that with whatever judgment you assess others, so you will be judged as well. Do you really want to take that chance when you stand alone before God? I guarantee you, with what measure you evaluate others, you will be evaluated in the same way. I don’t think you want that to happen. Don’t take the risk when you stand naked and alone before the Creator of the universe!
And why do you insist on searching for faults in other people? It’s as if you are looking for a tiny piece of dust in somebody’s eye. That speck of dust is so infinitesimal that you can barely see it. In the meanwhile you are unconscious of the fact that a 2 x 4 is dangling from your own eye! How can you not see that? Don’t you recognize the hypocrisy in this? You who are evil are completely blind to your own shortcomings. You with your own faults eagerly search out something to criticize in others. Better get rid of that log in your eye first, and then you will have clear vision so you can search for that splinter. Remember, you will be judged in the very same way that you insist on judging other people.
This is not to say that you should blindly overlook evil or stupidity or godlessness or blasphemy in the world. Don’t lose your sense of discernment. For instance - you don’t give that which is holy to the dogs, and you don’t throw pearls before swine. Why not? Because dogs don’t know the difference between what is holy and what is common, and neither are swine able to appreciate valuables. Animals will trample your treasures under foot and then they will turn around and attack you. They can tear you to pieces - for what?
I am not talking about animals but about people without God. In their ignorance they act like dogs and swine. You need to recognize this, so that you can avoid throwing pearls before swine. Be discerning! It’s as simple as that.
So, judging people with a critical spirit is something to be avoided. Change your life, because I will now show you a better way. Instead of condemning someone else, pray to God for that person. Turn your problems over to God. Seek spiritual help. Find guidance from above.
I tell you this very simply: Ask and you will receive. Seek and you will find. Knock and the door will be opened. You will not lose anything when you seek the presence of God. To the contrary. I promise you that everyone who asks receives, everyone who seeks finds, and for everyone who knocks, the door will open. I know of what I speak. I have discovered this to be true in my own experience.
Look. If your son asks you for a piece of bread, would you give him…? What would you give him? A rock? No, you would not. If your daughter wants a little fish, what would you give her….? A snake? Of course not. So if you who are evil - and you certainly know that you are not perfect, don’t you? - if you who are evil are aware of how to give good things to your children when they ask for something, how much more will your heavenly Father give what is good and right to those who ask him? This is the new way the Father wants you to live.
So stop making judgments all the time. I will sum up the Law and the Prophets for you. It is simply that people need love, and they need to be loved. Do therefore to others as you would want others to do to you. Treat others as you yourself desire to be treated! Surely if you follow what has been called ’the golden rule,’ you will be acting as the children of God.
But all that I have been teaching you is not easy to follow. Don’t think that life is a picnic. It is not. The gate to life is narrow and the road is difficult. It winds uphill all the way. You need to enter by the small gate and take the narrow way, because it will lead you to eternal life. Not many people will actually choose this road, but think about it: at the end of the way is the great expanse of heaven.
There is another road. It takes you in the opposite direction. The gate is very wide, and the read is known as Broadway. It’s smooth and easy and trouble free. You can coast downhill all the way. But this Broadway ends in a narrow pit. That pit is called “Destruction.” You will find there everything you loathe and detest, everything you hate even now.
I tell you with a heavy heart that many explore and travel on Broadway to hell, but few take the narrow road that leads to eternal life with God!
Look out for false prophets in the world, who will try to make you feel comfortable as you are coasting down Broadway. Their words are smooth and their manner is beguiling. They will impress you with what seems harmless at first. They will appear to be safe like woolly sheep, but they are actually as dangerous as ferocious wolves. They are determined to devour you. Yes, keep your eyes open and your minds awake, so you can tell the difference - whether you are confronted by a sheep or a wolf.
Let me change the metaphor. You will know the prophets and teachers by their fruits. When you go out to pick fruit, do you pick grapes from thorn bushes? I should say not. Neither do you find figs among thistles. Be sure to look at those inspirational speakers with your eyes wide open.
Every good tree bears good fruit, but a diseased tree will never produce good fruit. You know this to be true, don’t you? A healthy tree cannot grow unhealthy fruit, and a diseased tree cannot generate wholesome fruit. So, consider how you handle unproductive trees. You cut them down and throw them in the fire. That is what will happen to false teachers and fake prophets. Therefore, be sure to check out their “fruit,” before you are taken in by them.
Now, this is how it will be at the end of the world. Not everyone who calls me “Lord” will enter the kingdom of God. Yes, I am the One who will decide who will be saved and who will be lost. The Father has entrusted all judgment to the Son. Why is this true? So that all will respect the Son even as they respect the Father. I will say it plainly: Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him!
If you want to enter the kingdom of God, make it your aim always to do the will of your Father who is in heaven. That is why I told you to seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness.
You can expect some surprises on Judgment Day. Many will question the final decision. Here are some of the questions they will ask me:
“Lord, did we not preach in your name?”
“Did we not teach the Bible in your name?”
“Lord, did we not heal people by the power of your name?’
“Did we not drive out demons in the power of your name?”
“Lord, have we not done many good works in your name?”
And then I will tell them plainly, “I never knew you. Don’t you realize this is true? Didn’t you know this all along? Of course you knew. You just wouldn’t admit it to yourself, would you? Go away from me, you are not the people of God. You are evil-doers.”
Many who are confident that they have been good servants of the Lord will protest that they deserve eternal life. But they do not belong in the kingdom. It is not because you say the right words and call me “Lord” that you will qualify. No, no. It takes more than that. Listen carefully, so that you will clearly understand what you need to do before that judgment day.
Everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise person who builds a house on the rock. The wise choose a solid and strong foundation, so that when the rains come down, and the winds blow and the floods rise, their house does not fall. That is because it is built upon a solid foundation of rock.
But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish person who builds a house on the sand. When the rains come down and the winds blow and the floods rise, the foundation is washed away, and that house will come crashing down. I assure you solemnly, the collapse of that house will be terrible!
So, what is the difference between these houses? The foundation. And what is the foundation? Those who hear my words but do not act on them fail to enter the kingdom. Those who live out what they hear and therefore put it into action, will enter the eternal kingdom.
So, what is the teaching that you need to put into practice? I will tell you: it is everything I have talked about in this sermon! Yes, everything! Be open to this truth, and begin to live in this new way. Then you will know what it means to build your house on the rock.
What teaching? Well… Happy are the poor in spirit, the meek, those who are hungry and thirsty for righteousness, the merciful, the peacemakers, the pure in heart, even those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake. These are living out their faith in humility and kindness, in love and compassion.
These are the ones who salt the earth and light up the dark world.
Keep the law of God by your actions, but also keep it in your heart. When it is necessary, discipline yourself to resist temptation.
Every law is to be obeyed in your heart as well as in your life.
When you make a vow to God, let a simple “yes” and “no” be sufficient. Do not return evil for evil. Turn the other cheek.
Love your enemies. Show more love than the heathen and the pagans. Aim to be complete even as your Father in heaven is perfect.
Do good deeds, say prayers and discipline yourself secretly before God. Don’t expect to be noticed and rewarded as a spiritual person.
Pray humbly to your Father. You don’t need to impress him.
Forgive if you want to be forgiven.
Lay up treasures in heaven, not on the earth.
Serve only God, not God and something else. You can’t do that.
Aim with a single purpose if you want light and not darkness in your life. Do not be anxious about anything. Always trust your heavenly Father. Seek first the kingdom and righteousness - in everything.
Do not judge, but be discerning. Ask, seek and knock.
Have faith that your Father will take notice.
Enter and then walk the narrow way to life. Shun the Broadway. Evaluate teachers and prophets by their fruits and don‘t follow blindly.
If you want to enter eternal life, do the will of the heavenly Father.
Live your life on all these words of mine.
This is the foundation that will outlast the storms and floods which will surely come to everyone.
JESUS SEEKS AND SAVES
Matthew 8, 9
Jesus invited twelve of us to become his disciples. He expected us to pay attention and learn from his teaching, so that when he could no longer be with us, we would be able to proclaim the good news of the kingdom to the world. Some disciples were called before Jesus invited me. They told me how it happened.
One day while he was teaching by the lake of Galilee, Jesus asked some fishermen to take their boats out into the lake. One of them voiced his objection. His name was Simon. He didn’t like the idea at all. He complained that they had been fishing all night, and they were not only tired but feeling miserable because they had caught nothing. He grumbled a while, but then shaking his head and shrugging his shoulders, he recognized the authority of the teacher and took the boats out anyway.
Jesus pointed to an area where they should toss their nets. After they threw the nets over the side and dragged them through the water, they could not believe their eyes. They caught a large school of fish, so many that the nets began to break apart. When they hauled their catch aboard, even their boats started to sink under the weight! Simon came ashore and threw himself at Jesus’ knees.
“I don’t understand what I have just experienced, but how did you know there were those fish in the lake? We didn’t see any all night. This is a miracle! Look, Sir, I am a sinful man,” he confessed, “I don’t really know who you are - perhaps you’re a prophet of God - but you don’t want anything to do with the likes of me! I’m not worthy, I’m not good like you. Go away from me. Just leave me alone!”
Jesus stopped him, and said: “Don’t be afraid. You are the right person to be called as my disciple. I know that much about you. You are sensitive, and you are not afraid to confess your faults. Besides, you say what you think. Come, follow me, for you will not be earning your living by fishing in this lake any longer. From now on you will fish for people!
“I have prayed about whom to select for my disciples, and that is how I make my decisions. As my Father guides me, you, Simon, Andrew, James, John, all of you, come and follow me. There will be twelve disciples. Why twelve? The people of Israel began with twelve tribes, and my coming into the world is a new beginning for Israel. That is why I will choose twelve apostles.
“My decisions will not always be popular because I do not necessarily seek educated, learned people. Nor am I looking for the very religious. Those whom I call are not without human failings. They are ordinary, simple folk and they know they are sinners. The Spirit moves me to invite you, and the Spirit is prompting you to join me in this traveling ministry.”
That is how these fishermen became apostles. In those early days of his ministry, Jesus sometimes found faith in the strangest places. Right after he had delivered the Sermon on the Mount, as we called it, a man with leprosy slowly walked up to him. He knelt down and modestly expressed his faith: “Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.”
“Yes,” Jesus said, looking right at him, “I am certainly willing, and because you believe you can become clean, you will be healed. Go ahead, you may get up now.”
His leprosy was gone, just like that.
“Don’t take the time to tell anyone about this. Not right now. Go first to the priest and offer the gift Moses commanded you to give to God. Do this in thankfulness for the healing you have received from the Lord.”
When we arrived in Capernaum, a Roman centurion who had also heard of Jesus’ healing power came with a request. He seemed to be a humble man.
“Lord, I came here because I have a very sick servant at home. He is paralyzed and he is suffering much.”
“Very well,” Jesus said, “I will come with you and heal him.”
“Oh no, Sir, that is not necessary,” the officer answered. “I would like you to heal him of course, but I don’t deserve for you to enter my house. In fact, you don’t need to come. I believe that if you say the words, my servant will be healed. I know, Sir, about authority, being in the army and all that. I am an officer under authority. I also order soldiers who serve me to go, and they go. They do what I tell them. When I command, they obey. So, if you Sir, give the command, I believe that my servant will be healed.”
Jesus looked around at the crowd. He seemed affected by what the centurion had said, and singling him out, he announced to all: “I want to tell you something. I have not found anyone in Israel who has as great a faith as this man here. He believes in authority, and that is why he trusts me to have the authority to heal his servant.
“I assure you, that there will be those who will come from all over the world, from the east, the west, the north and the south and they will sit down in the kingdom of heaven with the people of faith, even with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. But those who are confident that they already belong to the kingdom will be rejected, because they do not live by faith in the heavenly Father. I tell you that there will be much weeping, and sorrow and the grinding of teeth.”
Not everyone who came to Jesus became a disciple. One day a teacher of the law appeared, who sounded very eager. “Sir, I will follow you wherever you go. You can count on me. I want to be one of your disciples.”
“Very well,” Jesus said to him. “Do you realize what this will mean if you decide to follow me? Do you understand that it will cost you something? Are you ready to make some sacrifices? Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head. Are you willing to follow a homeless teacher like me?”
The man didn’t like that. Needless to say, he didn’t come along with us.
Another also seemed to be enthusiastic, but he was not quite ready for the change: “I want to follow you, Lord. I believe that you are the One who should come. I can see the power that you have because you heal people and help them. But before I can join you, let me go home and bury my father.”
“When did your father die?” Jesus asked him.
“Oh, he has not died yet, Sir, but he is not well.”
“If you cannot come with me today, you won’t come with me tomorrow. If I am who you say that I am, follow me now. Once you have put your hand to the plow, don’t look back. As for the dead, let the dead bury their own.”
That man did not join us either.
But among those whom Jesus did invite to follow him was a young revolutionary, a member of the Zealots. The Zealots were underground militants who planned to overthrow the Romans. His name was Simon. He responded to Jesus’ invitation and willingly gave up violence. He renounced his reliance on weapons and became an apostle after he put away his sword.
As for me, I was working for the Roman government. I had signed up to become a tax gatherer for our occupiers, mainly because there was good money in it. I know this was not a worthy motive. And don’t ask me whether I took advantage of my fellow countrymen when determining their taxes. I have always thought of myself as an honest person, but no one is perfect.
Yes, many of us who worked for the government made a good living, but the Jewish leaders made us pay for it. They ostracized us. We were not welcome in public places, and we were even forbidden to attend houses of worship. They called us collaborators and rejected us as the lowest of the low, just as they looked down on the prostitutes.
So Jesus walked up to my tax booth by the side of the road that leads into Capernaum. He gave me a look that spoke to me of his authority, but all he said was, “Follow me.” Not a word about my past. No accusations about my job. Nothing about my making money. Nothing about my comfortable life. I had heard about him, of course, about his ministry in the name of God, and something within me convinced me that here was my chance at a new beginning! Now, looking back, I am convinced this calling was of God.
Immediately I closed my books and left the booth. The people standing around wondered what would happen when I walked over to the fishermen who were already Jesus’ disciples. Well, they looked at me a little strange at first, but they didn’t condemn me! And soon I was accepted as one of the twelve. But Jesus was severely criticized because of the disciples he had chosen.
That very week I invited Jesus to dinner at my house. I asked some friends, tax gatherers who worked with me as well as some who were not very religious. I really wanted them to meet Jesus. The religious leaders from Jerusalem also came to my house and watched all this. They criticized Jesus for sitting down to a meal with these undesirables. They thought it unthinkable that a spiritual teacher or maybe a prophet would stoop this low. They were critical because Jesus was unwilling to separate himself from this unholy company. But Jesus seemed to sense what was going on in their thoughts, and after a while he broke the silence and talked about what was on everyone‘s mind. This is what he said:
You are wondering [aren’t you?] why I am sitting here eating with people who are unworthy in your eyes, who are sinners. You reject them because of their work and their actions, and because they are far from being as devout and religious as you are. Let me ask you something. Who goes to see a doctor? People who are sick or those who are well? Of course - only the sick visit the doctor. As long as you are healthy, you don’t need help. Why should you receive treatment when you are feeling well?
Now this is an illustration. I am in the world for those who are spiritually sick, those who are needy. I have come to seek and to save those who are lost. These people here, whom you avoid, realize their hopeless condition. Why do you think they have responded to this dinner invitation? Because they were asked by their friend, yes, but also because they want to see and understand why Matthew has chosen to follow me! And are you questioning me because I have invited this prosperous business man to leave his job and become my disciple? Maybe he has needs too, and maybe he wants to be saved. Do you know why these others are all here? Because they are hungry for righteousness. They want to know about the kingdom of God. They are the poor in spirit who feel a need for God. They realize that they are lost!
I tell you the truth. I have not come for those who consider themselves very religious. I have not come for those who think they are already saved, who have a superior attitude and look down on everyone else. I have not come to invite those who are sure that God accepts them because they keep the law, observe religious ceremonies and do good works. They are convinced that they live a virtuous life. No, to the contrary, I am here for all who understand they are unworthy and inadequate, these so-called human failures whom you see around this table and whom you are likely to call “sinners.” I have come to invite “sinners” to repentance.
I want you who are critical of me to read your Bibles. Look up this reference: “I desire mercy and not sacrifice.” That is the word of God. What do you think it means? Does God really want your religious offerings? Can they, in fact, make you holy? When you bring a sacrifice, can this actually save your soul? Or does God want you to show mercy to those who are hurting and compassion to those who need to be forgiven and healed? Is it not clear from the Scripture that God desires love rather than sacrifice? Does this mean anything to you?
I will change my example. I have entered the world that those who are blind may have vision, and those who think they see may become blind to the truth. You don’t understand this, do you? Think about the signs I have given you. The blind see, the lame walk, the deaf hear. All these signs point to a spiritual truth, and the truth is this: God accepts and forgives sinners!
Only a few days ago you heard me say to a paralyzed man who was brought by his friends for healing: “Your sins are forgiven.” You really objected to this. You argued that only God can forgive sins, and you are right about that! I agree with you that only God can. But if only God forgives sins and I assure this poor soul, “your sins are forgiven,” what do my words imply? What is the meaning of this announced forgiveness? Is this blasphemy, as you seem to think? But what if I have the right to forgive sins? What if I have the authority? If that is true, then what does this tell you about who I am?
I say all this because I want you to think about what my words. You are blind to truth and deaf to the word of God. But you don’t believe you are blind, do you? You maintain that you can see. You think that you know God, but the fact is that you don’t know him. Not really. But I know him and if I should say that I don’t know him, I would become a liar just as you are.
With all your religious practices you fail to understand what is going on right in front of your noses! If I am telling you the truth, why don’t you believe me? If I say what I have heard from God, then whoever belongs to God will hear me and will recognize the words of God. It is obvious that the reason you do not see is because you do not belong to God! You have lost your sight!
Listen and understand. If you were truly blind and could accept that you are lost souls, you would not be guilty of sin. No, no, you would do something about your condition! The blind come to the light and receive sight. If you confess your sins and turn to God, your eyes will be opened! But you claim you can see. As long as you insist that you know the law of God, you will teach everyone else, but do you teach yourselves? That is why your guilt remains. Your sin is not removed. If you think you are good enough for heaven and do not need to be saved, you will not be saved!
And while we are sitting around this table I also hear you questioning why my disciples do not fast? Why are they not disciplined like the followers of John at the Jordan river? And why am I not as serious as the prophet John?
I will tell you why. When a bridegroom is present at the wedding, are people sad and gloomy? Not at all. When the celebration is in full swing, everyone is happy and in a good mood, and nobody thinks about fasting. But afterwards, when the bridegroom is taken away, then they will fast.
You don’t understand my illustration? It’s like this: I am comparing myself to a bridegroom at a wedding. As long as I am with my disciples, they will feast and we will rejoice. But the time will come when I will not be here, and then they will behave differently.
I know that my disciples don’t look like devout spiritual leaders. I have not chosen any apostles from the religious community. Why not? Because I receive guidance from my Father. I do always what pleases my Father. And I tell you that what is beginning here will eventually reach the whole world.
Do you know anyone who takes a new patch of material and sews it into an old, worn garment? That is not a good idea. To repair an rotten and torn piece of clothing is a waste of time.
Do you know anyone who pours new wine into old wineskins? That is not a good idea either. When the wine ferments it will expand, and as you know, the old wineskin will burst. The wine will leak out, and all is lost!
So, new wine must be poured into new wineskins so that they can expand. What does this mean? The new wineskins represent the disciples whom I have chosen. As for the new wine, it is the word of God, the words of grace and truth. My teaching is more than a repetition of the law. This is the good news of the kingdom that my heavenly Father reveals through me right now. I tell you that I speak nothing on my own but only what the Father teaches me. And this is the word you need to hear if you want to enter the kingdom.
I invite all who are willing to come to me. That is why I have chosen my disciples, and that is why I am here with those I want to call my friends. If you want to follow me, you are most welcome. If you are thirsty, I will give you drink. And if you listen to me, you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.
JESUS SENDS OUT HIS DISCIPLES
Matthew 10
Jesus was teaching and healing in the villages of Galilee while people kept coming to him from everywhere. He felt a lot of compassion for them, but he realized that he could not minister to every hurting and needy person. That is when he decided to commission us and send out the twelve apostles.
These are the names of the twelve: The brothers Peter and Andrew, and the brothers James and John. Philip and Bartholomew Nathanael were friends, and then there was Thomas, the twin. Another James, who was the son of Alphaeus was chosen, and then there were Thaddeus Jude, Simon the former Zealot and myself, Matthew. Last of all our treasurer, Judas Iscariot, who later betrayed Jesus was also an apostle. This is how Jesus instructed us:
I want to share something with you today. I have been moved by the many who have come to us recently. Do you have any idea what they look like to me? I see them with the eyes of a shepherd as lost sheep, as if they are without a shepherd. And how many more there must be who are unable to make the journey and reach us? We have been to villages and towns, but the mission is too big. I cannot do this alone. I need your help. My Father who guides me has revealed to me that you are to be involved in this ministry!
I have called you to be my disciples in order that you may learn from me. But you have also been chosen to become my apostles. A disciple is one who learns. An apostle is one who is also sent. A disciple receives a message. An apostles transmits a message. You need to be disciples before you can become apostles. But I am about to give you authority to go into villages and towns to teach and heal in my name. Announce to people what I have been preaching: “The kingdom of God has come near!”
Don’t go among the Gentiles, and don’t enter any town in Samaria. We don’t have time for that kind of an outreach right now. It will be enough if we limit ourselves to our people. You will find Israelites who are eager to hear about the kingdom of God, but not everyone will be interested. But those who have been prepared by the Spirit will respond to your witness..
You will come across some poor in spirit and others hungry for righteousness. Sometimes they look like lost sheep, but you will need to show them the way home to the Father. Tell them: “The kingdom of God is here.” Invite them to believe the good news. Call them to repentance. Offer them salvation and eternal life. Give them hope as you announce the kingdom. And always remember, you are apostles sent out on this mission in my name!
I also give to you authority to do the works of God, similar to what the Father has enabled me to do. The power to heal and comfort are divine gifts. You will be able to heal the sick, but you are not the healers. You will be able to cast out demons but only through the power of the Spirit. Your Father in heaven is stronger than any demon you will encounter. You will cleanse lepers from their terrible disease, but realize that their deliverance comes from God. And when you meet sorrow and grief because someone has died, you will have the gift of raising the dead! Surely you understand that this is not some power that you possess! I am sending you out on this mission, believing that the Spirit will use you as the Spirit has used me. Consider this as your calling - freely you have received, freely give!
You don’t have to pack a suitcase and drag it along everywhere. You will not need to bring any valuables, gold or silver in your belts. Neither will you need an extra shirt or another pair of sandals. Even a substitute staff is unnecessary. You will not be on a long mission trip. Perhaps people will give you some gifts because they realize that those who minister in the kingdom are worth their keep. I know that your witness will be productive for the kingdom.
When you enter a town or village, look for someone who is friendly, hospitable, kind. See if you can stay with them. If you are received with open arms, pray for them and let your peace remain in that home. If that is not the case, don’t give them a blessing. Leave, and go somewhere else.
Not everyone will receive you. Not everyone will even listen to you. If people in one town are resistant, continue to another. Shake the dust off your feet and keep moving. These towns will be judged one day. I tell you that it will be more tolerable on the day of judgment for cities like Sodom and Gomorrah who were destroyed, than it will be for the villages that reject you.
Don’t expect a completely successful mission tour. Yes, you will see some response to your preaching, and you will witness healings and deliverance, but you will not have an easy time. I want you to realize that sending you into the world is a little like exposing a sheep to a pack of wolves. Yes, you are the sheep and they are the wolves. Don’t be surprised. The world is hostile and wolf-like! This is true even among our own people. So I advise you to be as shrewd as snakes and innocent like doves. Maybe you think you can be one or the other. That’s not enough. I expect you to be both wise as a snake and innocent as a dove. Be on your guard. Expect trouble. You will be arrested and brought before local councils. They will threaten you and it may end in corporal punishment. They will beat you even in sanctuaries which are set aside for holy worship. You can expect persecution, even though you are coming in peace. You are humbly announcing the kingdom of God, you are on a mission to do works of compassion and mercy and healing, but even so you will not be kept from mistreatment, opposition and trouble.
Because of me you will be brought before councils, before governors and even kings. Officials will arrest you, and they will inquire why you insist on pursuing this mission of preaching and teaching? Then the time will come that you will have the opportunity to announce good news to both Jews and Gentiles. Whenever you are arrested, tell them boldly why you are doing this, and be sure to declare who sent you. You are representing me. And you know that I represent the Father. Do you understand that your witness is not only in the name of the Son but also in the name of the Father?
Now you must not worry about what you are going to say or how you should say it, especially when you are standing before hostile powers. It will be given you at that very moment what you are to say. The Spirit of your Father will guide your heart and mind, and your words will reflect what the Spirit of God wants you to testify.
There is more. Things will get worse in the world. You can expect enmity and harassment even from your relatives. Brothers will betray their own brothers to death. Fathers will condemn their children and children will turn their parents over to the authorities! They will be guilty of these evil acts even if such betrayal leads to the death of their relatives.
Because of me many will hate you and turn against you, but you must stand firm and hold fast in faith. You see, only those who show the courage to persevere to the end, will be saved. When you are persecuted in one place, flee to another. Keep moving. I urge you to continue your proclamation of the good news. The kingdom of God is the only hope of the world. There is no other hope. You will not have time to travel to all the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes again. Sot it is that you will continue your witness in the world until the kingdom of God comes in power and glory.
I remind you again that you have received these gifts for ministry.
As your teacher I have invited you to become my disciples. As your master I have called you to be servants. No student is above the teacher, and no servant is greater than the master. It is enough for a student to strive to be like the teacher and for a servant to emulate the master. Always remember that when people reject you they are actually rejecting me.
You have already heard that some religious leaders accuse me of working for Beelzebub. Soon they will also charge me with being an instrument of the Devil. Whether they identify me as Beelzebub or Satan or the Devil, it’s all the same evil. But if that is how they express their hatred of me, how much more will they despise you? You are my disciples, so what else can you expect?
In spite of all this hostility and resistance, do not be afraid of anyone. The truth will prevail. Whatever is evil and immoral will be exposed at the judgment. Nothing that is hidden will remain covered up. Everything that is concealed will be revealed, just as a trumpet blast is always loud and clear.
Since you know that there will be a final accounting when the whole world will be judged before the great King, you can witness freely and with confidence. Even if I tell you something in the dark, you can proclaim it in broad daylight. What is whispered in your ear, you are to shout from the rooftops. I will put it simply. Don’t be afraid of those who can kill the body, but who cannot destroy the soul. Fear only the One who can do away with your body and cast your soul into hell. God is the only One you need to reverence.
Since you are my disciples and you believe in the Father, you need to have confidence that your Father is always with you. He knows everything that has happened, that is happening and that will happen in the future. He is aware of the smallest details. Think about this: you know that two sparrows are sold for one measly penny in the market. Two for one! That is about as cheap as anything is these days. And yet one little sparrow can’t fall to the ground without your Father being aware of it. So, what about you? Are you not far more valuable than many sparrows? Don’t you know that God is fully conscious of who you are and what you are?
God knows everything about you! Do you know that the hairs on your head are numbered? You didn’t know that, did you? Well, they are. This is what the eternal God is like. This is the heavenly Father you can trust.
Now if you believe and publicly acknowledge me, I will also publicly acknowledge you before my Father in heaven. Rest assured that this will be the case on the day of judgment. But if anyone disowns me on the earth, I will also disown that one before my Father in heaven.
I need to warn you that you may run into yet more trouble when you follow me. Your own family may reject you because you are my disciples. Do not suppose I am here to bring peace on earth. I have not come to bring peace but a sword. How is that, you ask? What kind of trouble? A son may become antagonistic against his father, a daughter against her mother, a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law, yes members of the same family will be set against each other. Your enemies will be those of your own household.
How can this be true, you wonder? It happens because those who want nothing to do with me will oppose those who believe in me. It is a matter of unbelief against belief, of the false against the true of the children of the evil one against the children of the heavenly Father.
What I ask from anyone who wants to be my disciple is to place me first, just as I have said before that you need to seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness. That is the allegiance I seek. So it follows that anyone who loves a father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and anyone who loves a son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. You cannot place anyone else before me in order to avoid persecution.
Let me sum up. Anyone who welcomes you welcomes me, and anyone who receives me receives the One who sent me. Years ago when someone was recognized as a prophet, that one received a prophet’s reward. So also whoever welcomes someone known to be righteous will be given a righteous person’s reward.
But there is even more. Even someone, anyone who gives a cup of cold water in my name will not be overlooked. The Father who has numbered every hair of your head, will honor the humblest and least of all who serve in my name.
So, now I send you out in my name. Yes, it is as my Father has sent me, that I send you also. Freely you have received. Freely give.
JESUS EXPERIENCES CONFLICT
Matthew 11 and 12
Not long after we had completed our mission to the villages of Galilee, some disciples came from John the Baptist to question Jesus. John had been imprisoned by king Herod, and since he was locked up he had a lot of time to think. He had some real concerns, and that is why he sent his disciples with a few questions to ask Jesus. This is what John wanted to find out:“Are you, Jesus, the one who is to come? Are you the long expected Messiah? And if you are, why are you still working in Galilee? Why don’t you go down to Jerusalem and declare yourself? That’s where the power is, in Jerusalem, not up there in Galilee. So, tell me whether you are the one, or are we waiting for someone else?”
Jesus didn’t reply direct to these questions, but this is what he told John’s followers:
“When you return to the prophet, tell him what you have seen. You can report that the blind receive their sight, the deaf hear, the lame walk, and those who have leprosy are cured of their disease. Even the dead are raised! And besides all these miracles, the good news of the kingdom is preached to all, even to the poor and the lost. Ask John what he thinks about all this? Suggest that he reflects on these signs. Encourage him not to lose faith. And tell him, happy is anyone who does not turn from the Father because of me.”
When John’s disciples left to deliver that message, Jesus turned to the people who had been listening to all this. He addressed them with authority.
What do you want from me? Do you know what you want? When John came baptizing at the Jordan, some of you went to hear him. What did you expect to find there? A man dressed in fine clothes? No, no, those who wear tailor-made clothing live in expensive houses among the rich. Did you go out there because you wanted to see a prophet? Yes you did, and I tell you that John was more than a prophet. You have heard, haven’t you, that a forerunner will announce the coming of the Messiah? If you will accept what I am telling you, this is the “Elijah” who is to come. Yes, “Elijah” has appeared! The one of whom it is written: “I will send my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare the way before you.”
There has not been anyone born of women who is greater than John the Baptist. He is a man of faith. Even so, the least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he is. Why is this true? Because as I have told you, the greatest in the kingdom is a simple, trusting child. Since you have ears to hear, use them! Understand what you are hearing. It is the Father’s good pleasure to reveal these truths to anyone who humbly accepts and believes.
When you saw John, you also noticed that he was very disciplined. This prophet of God did not indulge in fancy food or drink, but you still accused him of having a demon. “He is so strict, so austere,” you complained. “He certainly does not expect us to deny ourselves like he is doing, does he?”
On the other hand when I appeared, I received invitations to parties and went to them. I enjoy food and drink, but you condemn me for what you call my ‘indulgence.’ You even accuse me of being a drunk and a glutton. You also point the finger because I choose to be a friend with sinners and those whom you consider unworthy. But wisdom demonstrates itself by its actions, and you can prove what is wise and right by what you observe.
What do you want in a prophet? Do you know what you want? I don’t think so. You are like children who come to play on the playground, and someone begins a sad song. All the others just stare and act bored. They don’t want to play funeral. Then someone else starts a merry tune. But nobody joins in and no one wants to dance or play wedding either. Like children who don’t like to play either wedding or funeral, do you know what you want?
I have taught the good news in towns like Chorazin and Bethsaida, and of course often in Capernaum. I have given you signs of the presence of God. I have healed the sick and saved the lost, but you have not repented or shown the slightest interest in changing your evil ways. You have not turned to God, and you have no desire to do his will.
I tell you that it will be more tolerable on the day of judgment for sinful cities like Tyre and Sidon than it will be for you, Capernaum! You will not be lifted up to the skies. No, instead you will be brought down to the depths. You condemn Sodom and Gomorrah for their sins, but if the signs that have been shown in your towns would have been done in Sodom, they would have turned from their sinful ways and avoided the judgment. Do you realize that those evil cities would be thriving in Israel today if they had repented?
Even so, I give you an invitation right now. Yes, whoever will may come to me for salvation. Believe that all things have been committed to me by my Father. This means that everyone is welcome. It is true that no one knows the Father except the Son, and those to whom the Son will reveal him. But it is not too late for anyone to come to me. In fact, all you who are tired and weary, all who are burdened by your sins and failures are welcome, and I will give you rest. If you seek me sincerely, if you repent and believe, you will enter by the narrow gate and receive eternal life!
I will make you an offer. Take my yoke on you and learn from me. I will help you to pull the load. Yes, pull with you. Without me you can do nothing. With me everything is possible. Learn from me and I will teach you a new way of living. You will discover that my yoke is easy and my burden is light, especially when you compare it to the load of sin and shame you are carrying! I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.
I warn you to stop being so critical. You are constantly on the lookout for the slightest reason to find fault with me and my disciples. One day you observe them walking through the fields, picking some grain because they are hungry. And because they are harvesting on the Sabbath, you consider this work. So you tell me about this and insist that I stop them. They are breaking the law, you say. What they are doing is illegal, you say. It is not right to work on the Sabbath, you say.
Wait a minute. Haven’t you read the Scripture? Don’t you remember what king David did one day when he and his men were hungry? They were so famished that David led them into the house of God, and they actually consumed the sacred bread of the altar, bread dedicated to the Lord! And what does the Bible say about the priests who on the holy Sabbath offer sacrifices? While they are doing their duty are they not working in the temple? Priests are also allowed to eat on the Sabbath, and they are not guilty of breaking the law. I remind you again that the heavenly Father desires mercy rather than sacrifice. Think about what this means, before you start condemning, for this is the word of God.
Do not accuse me of Sabbath breaking. I tell you that the Son of Man is not the slave of the Sabbath, but the Lord of the Sabbath. Don’t you realize that human beings were not created for the Sabbath, but that the Sabbath is God’s gift to you? Human life was created before the Sabbath, it’s not the other way around.
And why do you object when I desire to heal someone on the Sabbath? What is wrong with that? Is that to be classified as “work?” What are we to do in the house of God, when a person enters with an infirmity, like the man whose hand was painfully deformed? You want him to live with that stigma when there is a possibility that his hand can be restored? Or do you want him to leave the sanctuary and wait for another day? Why?
Tell me something. If you have a sheep or a goat that falls into a pit on the Sabbath day, will you leave them there? Will you just walk away and allow the animal to suffer until the next day? I don’t think so. You lift your sheep out of the pit, even though that means you are doing work on the Sabbath. Yes you are breaking the law.
Now tell me, what is more valuable, a sheep or a person? That is not a contest, is it? Well, if human beings are more valuable than animals in the sight of God then it follows that it is lawful to heal on the Sabbath, doesn’t it? It is right to deliver the lost and set them free in the house of God! I assure you that the angels in heaven rejoice over one soul who repents.
I have even heard you criticize the signs I have given people. The other day when I healed a demon possessed man, some people started talking about the Messiah. They thought the Messiah may have come. But you don’t believe that I have received the power from God. You accuse me of performing these miracles by Beelzebub, the ruler of the demons. Are you serious? Do you really reproach me of being in league with Satan?
Think about what your indictment means. Suppose there is a kingdom fighting a civil war. Many of its citizens will die. Or, if a city takes up arms against itself, that city will be destroyed. So also a house divided against itself will not endure. Therefore if Satan assaults Satan, his reign of evil is over. That is not happening, is it? And if I am opposing demons by the power of Satan, how do you think other healers are restraining evil spirits? Let them be your judges. Consider what you see happening among you. I tell you that through the Spirit of God evil spirits are overpowered, and only by the Spirit. That is why I assure you that the kingdom of God has come!
Look at this another way. Suppose a thief wants to rob a house. He knows that a strong man lives there, so how can he get into the house? He needs to find an entry, and then he must wrestle the strong man to the ground. After tying him up, he can ransack the place.
I use this illustration because the kingdom of God is really here. The domain of Satan is being challenged. The Spirit of God is working and that means anyone can be forgiven for anything, even for blasphemy and false accusations. But one thing will never be forgiven, and that is the rejection of the witness of the Holy Spirit. If you fail to accept the coming of the kingdom, if you rule out these good works of God and label them actions of Satan, you are resisting and denying the Holy Spirit, who is at work in the world. And for that, you can never be forgiven if you will not repent - not in this world nor in the age to come.
I assure you once again - anyone who speaks a word against me or sins against the Son of Man will be forgiven anything and everything. But whoever discounts the witness of the Spirit in the world, and deliberately continues to reject the good news of God will be damned forever.
Make a tree good and the fruit will be good. Make a tree bad and its fruit will be bad. You recognize a good tree by its fruit, don’t you? Apply that to yourself. If you are evil within, how can you say or do good things? With your mouth you disclose what is in your heart! And if your heart is corrupt, so will your speech be also. Good people bring forth good things from within, and immoral people generate only evil from their hearts. Isn’t that obvious?
So I warn you, everyone will have to give an account of everything they have said. Yes, every single word will be judged on the day of judgment. Whether it was intentionally spoken or even if it was a slip of the tongue. Everything counts! Therefore, do not speak evil. Do not judge or be critical. Do not accuse and find fault. Do not defame and belittle. Do not curse and blaspheme. You will be judged even by what you consider to be empty words.
“I didn’t mean anything by it,” you say. Yes, but you did mean something, or you wouldn’t have said it. Your words express your thoughts. I warn you that by your words you will be accepted and by your words you will be condemned.
Some of you are asking for a sign. What kind of a sign? You demand evidence that I have come from God? That I am a prophet? That I am the One you are looking for? Is this really the kingdom of God? All these questions!
Are you blind and deaf? Have you missed the signs I have given you? I will repeat what I answered John the Baptist. Stop, look and listen: the blind receive their sight, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is preached to the poor. What more do you want? Can you ignore this? Can you dismiss what is happening all around you? An evil and adulterous generation demands signs. And that’s what you are, evil and adulterous. You are so wrapped up in your little world that you fail completely to recognize the presence of the kingdom.
There will be no other signs. No more. The only sign you will receive is the one from Jonah. Yes, Jonah the prophet. Do you remember what happened to him? He was called of God to preach to the heathen city of Nineveh, but Jonah didn’t want to go. He sailed away in the other direction. Out in the ocean he was swallowed by a great fish. Miraculously he survived three days and three nights in the belly of that fish! Then God delivered him from that horrible trial. This is the sign of Jonah - a miraculous comeback, a deliverance from God, a resurrection so to speak!! Like Jonah, the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth and after those days he will return. It’s a comeback! That is the only sign God will give you!
But there is more about Jonah. After his ordeal Jonah received a second chance. He was called again by the Lord and this time Jonah decided he’d better obey. He went to Nineveh and preached judgment to come. Do you remember what happened? The whole city repented and turned to God! Today, right here in your midst is someone greater than Jonah, and you don’t recognize this fact, this revelation!
Do you remember the story about the Queen of Sheba? She traveled a long way from the south to see king Solomon. She had heard of his wisdom and wanted to find out for herself. And today, I assure you, a greater than Solomon is in your midst! What more can I say? Open your eyes and ears!
I leave you with a little parable. Do you know what takes place when an evil spirit is cast out of a person? Well, this demon goes around looking around for a new place to live. But when it cannot find anything, it reasons, “Why don’t I return to where I was before? I was very happy there.”
So he revisits the place and is surprised to find that it’s been swept, cleaned and put in order. Now he flits around and invites seven other evil spirits who are more wicked than he, and they all drop in unexpectedly on that person. So, the person who cleaned house is far worse off than before!
What does this story mean? It is a parable about this generation which has started a little house-cleaning, but has rejected the witness of the Spirit. You don’t understand my story, do you? You see, getting rid of an evil spirit is only the first step. You freshen up your life, but something else is important - you need to invite the Spirit of God into your “empty house.” The Spirit of God wants to live in you! Only then can you be sure that no evil spirits will return!
That’s why I told you a moment ago, make the tree good and the fruit will be good. A spiritual change begins in your heart. And that is how the kingdom will come to you.
PARABLES AND STORIES
Matthew 13
One day as large crowds gathered by the lake of Galilee, Jesus was teaching them from a boat. Some stood on the beach, but most people sat down as he spoke to them in parables. It was a memorable day.
Today I plan to tell you some stories, but these are more than stories. They are parables which will help you to understand something about the kingdom of God. Not everyone will get what these stories tell about the kingdom of God, and if you don’t ‘get it,’ you need to ask some questions. In these parables I am revealing the secrets of the kingdom. Use your eyes and ears, listen and observe. I assure you that those who meditate on the truth will understand, and more will be given. They will desire to live like those who belong to the kingdom of God.
Others will only hear these words, but they will not understand the meaning. That is because their hearts are unfeeling and their minds are closed. But happy are you whose ears hear and whose eyes observe. In the past, many prophets have strained to see what you are seeing, but they were denied. That is why even now you are envied and you are being blessed!
I begin with a story about a farmer who scatters seed in his field. As he walks through the field, some of the seed falls on the path he treads. You have probably watched birds following a farmer. They know that this seed is food, and they swoop down after he passes by and pick up that seed.
But there is also seed that will fall on ground that has not been well prepared. Rocks and boulders are beneath the surface, and as the seed drops the ground is too shallow for it to take root. The rocks obstruct the growth, and the seed sprouts too quickly. Such fragile plants cannot endure the hot sun and therefore that seed will also be unproductive.
There is still more seed that falls among weeds. That land has not been properly cleaned out, and when the seed begins to grow the weeds surround them. The plants seem to do well for a while but in time the weeds choke them out completely. Nothing comes of that crop either.
But some of the seed falls into good ground. It will follow the natural cycle of growth and become productive. Some of these plants will be so prolific that one seed can multiply thirty, some sixty and some one hundred times! This planting in good ground will grow into an abundant harvest!
Again I say, since you have ears to hear, listen and understand! Why are you staring at me as if you don’t comprehend? You want me to explain this parable to you? All right, listen. This is what it means.
What do you think I am doing when I preach about the kingdom? I am scattering seed like a farmer. You see, the word of God is like that seed. The words have power to transform a person and produce new life. But it must find good ground and grow unobstructed. Sometimes the word of God falls on a hardened path, where the birds swoop down and pick it up. These birds are like the evil one, yes, I mean Satan, who makes sure immediately after the word of God has been preached to snatch it away! All of it. Such people do not understand the truth and besides, they are preoccupied with keeping their schedules and are busy doing other things which they consider more important, so that the good news of the kingdom finds no room in them. They have neither the time nor the inclination for God.
The seed that falls on rocky ground does a little better. This stony, unprepared earth is a picture of those who seem happy to hear the word of God. They’re enthusiastic and so they respond with their emotions and feelings, but nothing more. They may even cry a little and tell you that they have been blessed. The problem is that their experience is only on the surface. They don’t have any depth, so when trouble or persecution arrives, their feelings go up in smoke. These shallow believers are unable to accept suffering or hardship of any kind. And as a result the word of God is lost!
What about the seed that falls among the weeds? In time, the weeds take over and the struggling plants fail. They die. What does this mean? It means that if the weeds in your life are allowed to grow, you will eventually become unfruitful. What are these weeds? Worldly concerns, financial worries, anxiety, fear, hopelessness, and anything that causes tension or builds pressure. When you attempt to serve two masters, which is something you cannot do, the deceitfulness of materialism will prevent a good harvest.
But the seed that falls in the good soil is like those who hear the word and understand it. They apply the truth and they experience change. The word enters into their hearts, and they will be productive. The results are not all the same. Some increases will be thirty times, some sixty, and others a hundred! This is the harvest God is looking for in everyone of you who receives the truth. And I assure you that the word of God is able to accomplish this because, like seed, it has the power when you welcome it in your life!
Now here is another parable about the kingdom of God. See if you can understand it. This is also a story about a farmer. This farmer sows good seed in his field, but that night while everyone is asleep an enemy sneaks around that field with an evil purpose. By the light of the moon the enemy throws a mixture of destructive weeds into that field. Nobody suspects anything, that is, not until the plants begin to grow. One day the servants of the farmer working in the field, realize that something is amiss. They inform the farmer about the weeds sprouting up all over the place.
“Sir, did you not throw good seed in your field? We know you did a thorough job, but we see weeds growing up everywhere. Why, Sir?”
“An enemy has done this,” the farmer says.
“What do you mean, Sir? You don’t have any enemies!”
“Yes, I do,” the farmer answers. “What you see is not something I have done. These weeds are the work of an opponent who wants to destroy me.”
“Sir, would you like us to go out and dig up the weeds?”
“No, you can’t do that,” says the farmer. “The problem is that if you pull up those weeds, you will uproot the good plants too.”
“So, what do you want us to do?” the workers ask.
“Nothing.” They are dumbfounded. “No, nothing,” repeats the farmer. “You cannot dig out the weeds without losing the crop. Everything will need to grow until it’s ready to pick. Then we’ll pick out all the weeds first, stack them and burn them. They’re good for nothing. And then you can pluck the grain.” After the people left, we went into a house with Jesus. We asked him: “Would you please explain to us the meaning of the weeds in the field? Who is the enemy and who is the farmer? What is the meaning of the wheat and the weeds? We don’t get it.”
Jesus answered: These stories are about the kingdom! Keep that in mind as I explain this parable to you. The field is the world. The one who sows good seed is the Son of Man. This is what I am doing day after day as my Father guides me. Now ‘the seed’ in this parable means something different from the first story. The good seed represents you and all those who follow and believe in me. The weeds, on the other hand, are the children of the evil one. The weeds are those who reject me and don’t want anything to do with the kingdom. Can you guess who my enemy is? Yes, the Evil One, the Devil. His followers are the weeds.
The harvest is the end of the world. Until that time, the good and the bad will be mixed together in the world. Believers and unbelievers, the saved and the lost. But the time will come for a separation - the great judgment. The Son of Man will send out the angels of God, for they are the harvesters. Those who are not the children of the kingdom will be removed and burned in the fire. That is how everything will end. Whatever causes offense and all who selfishly follow their fleshly desires will be rejected. I assure you there will be weeping and grinding of teeth. But the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom. They will be forever with God. Listen to what I tell you about the kingdom.
Now are all of you able to hear more parables? I have two very short stories. The kingdom of God is like a mustard seed. Have you seen mustard seeds? As you know, they are very small. Now this tiny mustard seed is able to grow into a large plant, even into a small tree. This tree will attract many birds, all kind of birds, who will nest in its branches. This means that as you can see right now, the kingdom of God has small beginnings. You are the twelve chosen as my apostles along with those who believe in Israel. But the time will come when disciples will enter the kingdom from the north, south, east and west of the world. Yes, even Gentiles will belong to God’s kingdom!
Here is another short story about the kingdom of God. Picture a woman baking bread in the kitchen. She measures quite a lot of flour and adds other ingredients. Then she puts in a little bit of yeast, not a large quantity mind you. It takes very little yeast to cause the entire mix to rise as it bakes in the oven. But that little bit permeates the whole loaf, and this is how the kingdom of God will permeate the world. That is how the kingdom will come to pass.
Now I want you to consider this question. Ask yourself, how important is the kingdom of God? How significant is it? What is its value for your life?
Here are two short stories to answer those questions. The kingdom of God is like a treasure hidden in a field. Someone who had accumulated jewelry, silver and gold wanted to hide it all in a safe place, so he buried it somewhere in the ground. He didn’t tell anyone. When he died quite suddenly, no one knew about this treasure. Years later a laborer was digging in that field and his shovel struck something hard. When he uncovered it, he realized it was not a rock but a priceless treasure. What do you suppose he did? First he covered up the ground. Then he went to the owner and told him he wanted to buy the field. When he learned the price, he took all his savings and sold everything else he could think of. He returned to the owner and made an offer. The land cost him everything, every penny, but he was able to buy the field. And why? Because of that treasure!
What does this parable mean? The kingdom of God is like a treasure of great worth, of enormous value. But if you want to enter the kingdom, it will cost you everything you have! I’m not talking about money, that’s only an illustration. You can never buy your way into the kingdom with money. This is about faith and commitment, about repentance and perseverance. This is about seeking first the kingdom of God and pursuing righteousness!
Another story. There was once a jeweler who was on the lookout for an exceptional pearl. It had to be exquisite, superb, perfect! He traveled everywhere, but never found anything that met his standards. Then one day he was overcome with excitement because he discovered a pearl that was exactly what he had been looking for. It was magnificent! Instantly he made the decision. But when he found out the price, he realized it was beyond his resources. Could he gather that much together? He sold everything he owned, held back nothing and returned with a bid to the pearl merchant. That is how he acquired this exquisite jewel.
Do you understand these parables about the treasure and the pearl? I have been speaking about valuables on earth, but I’m really comparing this to the kingdom of God. That heavenly kingdom is more valuable than earthly treasures. The kingdom of God is priceless. And when you discover that kingdom, you will realize it is the one thing you have always longed for! But if you want to belong in that kingdom, it will cost you everything you have, yes everything you are. But don’t look at what you have given up, think only about what you are getting in return! Anyone who sacrifices everything for the treasure or the pearl, concentrates only on what they are getting, not on what they are giving up! Believe me, the kingdom of God is of far greater value than you ever dreamed.
Now finally today, I want to tell you a parable about the end of the world. But it is not only about the end, it is also about what kind of a person you ought to become right now! Here is the parable.
The kingdom of God is like a dragnet that fishermen throw into a lake. This net is stretched between two boats and ‘dragged’ through the water. It has pieces of lead at the bottom, causing the net to sink, and to float because of cork at the top. As the net covers the lake from top to bottom, it gathers all kinds of fish. When it is full, the fishermen will pull the net out of the water and take it ashore. Then they sit down and pick over their catch on the beach. They collect all the fish that can be sold in the market place and pack it in barrels with salt to preserve the fish.
As for everything else that is caught in the net which is unclean and cannot be consumed, the fishermen merely toss that on the beach. The birds that have followed the boats on the lake have waited for this moment. They swoop down and fight over the rejects. They dispose of most everything.
That’s how it will be at the end of the world. The angels will come and separate the good from the bad. The righteous will enter the kingdom and the unrighteous will be left outside. So the gates will be shut. I tell you again that people will be weeping hysterically and grinding their teeth - on the outside.
Have you understood these parables? You have?
Then everyone who receives the truth of the kingdom is like a businessman who can bring and show you beautiful things and valuable antiques. He is like a teacher who can explain the truth about life, and who is able to share the good news with anyone who hungers for the word of God.
But let me warn you about something. A prophet is without honor in his hometown. Those people who know you, even some from your own family may not welcome you. When I return to Nazareth you will see what I am talking about. I will be invited to speak in the house of worship on the Sabbath. People will ask questions, but they will not put their trust in me. I will not be able to heal anyone, because they will not accept the signs I give them. Why? Because they do not consider me a prophet who has come from God. Why is that? Because they know my family and regard me as a local boy.
As I say, a prophet is without honor in his hometown That is why there will be no healings or miracles done there. It is because of a lack of faith. But I assure you that if you have faith in God, nothing will be impossible to you. You will even be able to move mountains. Yes, I’m serious! I mean what I say. You can live placing your trust in the living God.
WALKING ON WATER AND OTHER SIGNS
Matthew 14, 15
When we heard that John the Baptist had been brutally beheaded in prison by king Herod, we were shocked. Jesus was deeply moved by this tragic news. He suggested that we all go to a quiet place and pray. We took a boat across the lake, but people followed us on the road that runs along the lake. When we landed Jesus saw the crowd and immediately started to help people with their problems. He showed compassion for them as they brought their sick, and he healed many. This turned into a long day.
As evening approached some of us urged him: “Send all these people away. They are getting hungry, and we’re far from any town. There is no food available out here. Better tell them to start for home, so they can get something to eat.”
Jesus said, “Why do they need to go away? Why don’t you give them something to eat?”
“We don’t have anything,” we answered. “Look at them. We’re far from town and this is a huge crowd. How can we feed all of them? With what?”
Then Andrew spoke up: “Wait a minute. I’ve been talking to a boy here. He’s willing to share his lunch, but he only has two little fish and a couple of pieces of bread.”
Jesus picked up on that. “Bring the boy to me, Andrew. Now, all of you help the people to sit down in groups on the grass. Leave room for you to walk among them. But first, let us give thanks to God.
‘Our Father in heaven, thank you for all your gifts. Thank you for the food you provide. May it feed your people. We honor you, always. Amen.’”
We watched as he broke the pieces of bread and divided the fish. We found some baskets and went up to him. Then as we went to serve the people, the food miraculously multiplied! There was enough for everyone! They were all satisfied. We experienced and saw this feeding, but we had no idea what was happening or how it happened. All we knew was that when we picked up the leftovers, there were twelve baskets with bread and fish! And we had served more than 5000 men, women and children.
Later Jesus dismissed the crowd and directed us to get into a boat. We were to sail to the other side of the lake. As we took off, we watched him go up on a hill to pray. He stayed there a long time.
Then the wind came up and the waves turned into a challenge. Rowing became harder with the rolling waves, and it was very dark out there. Suddenly, to our surprise we saw a form walking on the water! It was coming straight for us! We were alarmed and scared, because we had no idea who or what this was about! We were being tossed in the boat in the eerie dark of night, and something was coming toward us?
Someone cried out: “It’s a ghost.”
“No, no!” It was the spirit talking back to us! “Do not be afraid. It is I. Take courage. I’m coming to the boat.” Jesus was walking toward us on the water!
We couldn’t speak, but Peter did not hesitate. He called out from the boat: “Lord, if it is you, I mean if you are actually walking on the water to us, can I do that also?”
“Yes, you can,” Jesus said.
“Then, Lord, tell me to come to you.”
“Go ahead. Come on,” Jesus said.
And there he was, our friend Peter actually believing that he could walk on water, stepping out on the lake! He stood there for a moment and then he actually took a couple of steps toward Jesus. But looking around he realized that the wind was blowing and the waves were moving and he became afraid. Very quickly he began to sink.
“Lord, save me,” he cried out. Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him.
“Oh, you of little faith,” Jesus told Peter as he climbed back into the boat, “You started out well because you believed. Why did you lose your faith so quickly?”
Then Jesus actually addressed the wind and the waves! He commanded the wind to stop and the water to calm down. We held our breath. We looked at him with awe. We were baffled by all this. He walked on the water! He calmed the wind and the waves!
“You are the Son of God,” someone exclaimed. No one contradicted him.
As soon as we came to land people crowded around him again. They brought their sick, and he healed them. Some even touched his clothing, believing they would be healed that way. And so they were!
But some religious leaders were looking for things to criticize. They objected. “Why do your disciples break our traditions? Why do they not keep our laws? Why do they eat without washing their hands?”
“And why do you break the commandments of God for the sake of your traditions?” Jesus asked them.
“What do you mean by that?” they asked him. This is how Jesus answered:
Here is how you break the commandments of God by your tradition. Consider, for example, the command to ‘honor your father and mother.’ It is written in the law that ‘anyone who curses his father or mother is to be put to death.’ But you get around that by teaching people when they decide to make a gift to God, they can declares that gift ’devoted to God.’ And so they are no longer under obligation to family! What should have been used to show respect to parents is no longer required. Do you realize what you are doing? You are not keeping the commandment to honor your elders and neither are you honoring God. You nullify God’s word, making it ineffective by your tradition.
You are hypocrites, that’s what you are! The prophet Isaiah was right when he said, ‘These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. They worship me in vain because their teachings have become mere human rules and regulations!’
Listen carefully as I explain that whatever goes into your mouth will not corrupt you, but what comes out of your mouth can do great damage! You are more concerned about what goes in, aren’t you, rather than what comes out. I realize that you Pharisees are offended by what I am saying. That’s because some of the things you teach are offensive to God. But every plant that my heavenly Father has not placed in the ground will be pulled up by the roots.
I warn you people, to be careful about the Pharisees. Listen to them but don’t do everything they do, because they are blind guides. And you surely realize, don’t you, when the blind lead the blind, that’s a prelude to disaster. Both the leaders and their followers will fall into the ditch!
Then Peter asked him, “What do you mean by this, ‘whatever goes into the mouth will not corrupt you?’ Are we not to observe what the law of Moses teaches about food and diet?”
Jesus replied: You don’t understand me, do you? You think I am speaking against dietary laws? This is a different issue. Whatever enters the body by the mouth goes into the stomach and then is eliminated by the body. You all know that. But what comes out of your mouth reveals the real you. What emerges originates within, from the heart, and that will damage you. Let me be clear about this. The human heart is not perfect. It is not clean, not pure. If it were, you would not have so many problems. The truth is, that from within you, from your heart originate all evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, stealing, false testimony, slander, lies - everything evil, everything corrupt. This list goes on and on. And those are the things that defile you and they will in the end destroy you. But when you eat with unwashed hands that does not influence your heart. That cannot really harm you.
Jesus wanted to get away from the Pharisees for a while, so we went across the border and walked the road to Tyre and Sidon. That’s when an unusual incident took place. A woman from that area, a Canaanite, wanted the attention of Jesus since she had heard about his healing power. A strange conversation developed. We tried to keep her quiet, but she wouldn’t stop.
“Lord, I believe you must be the Son of David as your people say,” she said to Jesus. “Help me, Sir. My daughter is possessed by a demon. I can’t control her. She does strange things. She is really suffering. She’s not getting better. I’ve lost my little girl, only she’s not so little any more.”
But Jesus didn’t pay any attention to her. He simply ignored her. That didn’t stop her however. She kept crying out to him with a constant barrage.
“Go away,” we told this foreigner. “Can’t you see that the Master is not willing to help you? He has not come here to heal people like you. We are Israelites, as you can see. So go away. Don’t bother him any more.”
She kept on anyway. “Lord, Son of David, have mercy on me!”
We went to Jesus: “You have to do something about this, Lord. This woman has a daughter who is demon possessed, and she won’t leave us. She will not listen. Why don’t you do something? Why don’t you tell her to go?”
“I have been sent only to the house of Israel,” Jesus said.
She heard that, but it did not stop her. She forced her way through the people and knelt before him.
“Lord, help me,” she pleaded. “I can’t do anything for my daughter. She is uncontrollable. She won’t listen to anything I say. She is possessed.”
“It is not right to take the children’s bread and throw it to the dogs,” Jesus answered. “Do you understand what I am saying? When you are poor, you feed the children at your table first, but not the dogs or cats. As I told you, I have come first and foremost for the people, Israel. Not for foreigners.”
“Yes, I know that, Sir. I am willing to accept that. And if you are trying to insult me by calling me a dog, I will not be offended. I know that we are not the chosen people. But what about this, Sir? Even in a poor family the dogs get the crumbs that fall from the table. I’m willing to settle for that. I beg you for some crumbs! Whatever you will give me.”
Jesus looked at her down on her knees, and then offered her his hand and helped her up. “Woman, you have great faith. Because you have humbled yourself and because you believe! You will have the answer to your prayers. Go home. Your daughter has been healed already.”
She kissed his hand and believing with tears in her eyes, went home.
We returned to the lake of Galilee. There Jesus continued to heal and teach many people for several days. There was rippling excitement every time a mute spoke, a cripple was able to walk, a blind person could see and someone suffering from a debilitating disease was made whole again. Many people praised the God of Israel.
“The people are getting hungry again,” Jesus said to us, “and they have nothing to eat. If I send them away like this, some may collapse on the road before they return home.”
“Where are we going to buy food for all these people?” someone asked. “We’re too far from town again. There are no markets anywhere.”
“How much bread do you have?” Jesus wanted to know, hoping that we would remember what happened a few days ago. But it seemed to have slipped our minds. “Seven slices of bread. That’s all. A few little fish.”
Jesus again instructed us to have the people sit down in groups. He took the few pieces of food, prayed over them, giving thanks to God, and handed them for us to pass out. The same miraculous thing happened again which we saw the first time! We had no idea how the food multiplied as we were serving, but again there was more than enough for everyone. They were all satisfied. We even had leftovers again! Seven baskets full, and this time we counted over four thousand people including the women and children.
Two days later the religious leaders were testing Jesus again. They asked him for a sign from heaven. A sign that would make them believe.
He replied this way: You are very good at forecasting the weather. You look at the sky in the evening. When there is a brilliant sunset and the sky is red, you say, we’re going to have a nice day tomorrow. And then in the morning you look at the clouds that have rolled in and you say, it certainly looks like rain today.
You can predict the weather for a day, but why are you unable to read the signs of the times? Do you understand why I am here? Do you realize what God is doing? Are you able to predict what will happen tomorrow?
I will tell you this much. No sign will be given you, except the sign of the prophet Jonah. Jonah was swallowed by a great fish, but he survived for three days and three nights in the belly of that fish! Then God delivered him from that horrible trial. That’s the sign of Jonah! A miraculous comeback, a deliverance from God, a resurrection so to speak!
With that we left and went across the lake of Galilee again.
Later on Jesus said to us: “Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.”
“What do you think he means by that?” Peter asked.
“I don’t know,” James said.
“I think he is talking like this because we didn’t bring any bread on our trip,” I volunteered.
“Yes, we should have thought of that,” James replied.
Jesus listened to us go back and forth, and then he reprimanded us. Only it didn’t sound like a scolding. He always emphasized that he cared for us, and his compassion was evident. That’s how he made us feel. He said:
You don’t have much faith, do you? I would like you to have more faith in God. And why are you talking like this about bread? Don’t you observe the signs I am giving you? Haven’t you noticed anything unusual during these days? How do you suppose over five thousand were fed from one boy’s lunch? Your Father in heaven did that. How else is it possible when we only had a few pieces of bread and a couple of fish? How many baskets were filled with leftovers? Remember? And then you participated again with over four thousand people, starting with a few scraps. You had how many leftovers?
When I warn you about the yeast of the Pharisees, I am not talking about bread. What I’m concerned about is their teaching, their tradition, what they emphasize and what they omit! Beware of what they expect people to do, while they themselves fail to lift even one little finger.
And when you see the signs I give you and the evidence is all around you, believe in me and in my Father who is always with me. I cannot by myself feed thousands, but my Father is here and my Father will provide. Have faith in God! Give some thought to what you observe when the lame walk, the blind receive their sight, the deaf are able to hear and the lepers are wondrously cleansed. Does this convince you that God’s power is right here and right now?
Besides, have you ever seen anyone walk on water? This is not a trick. I do not like tricks. You are witnessing a demonstration of the power and presence of God. So believe that the kingdom of God is among you, because I am among you.
How else can I demonstrate God’s presence? If you accept these signs you will be drawn to me, and you will discover who I am and why I have come. Satisfy your curiosity. Investigate everything. Do not be afraid to respond to what God reveals. That is the purpose of faith. That is why I urge you to believe in me.
Faith is a gift from God. My Father desires to give you faith, and it will be given when you approach me humbly and sincerely. I call everyone to repent and believe. That is how you will see the light and be saved. God wants to instill this faith in you, because faith precedes miracles. Miracles do not create faith, but by faith you will acknowledge the works I do. It is through faith that you will recognize that the kingdom of God is in your midst.
The Father works miracles. I can do nothing of myself, but only what I see the Father doing. Your faith will develop when you meditate on my words and on the signs I have given you. My words are guided by the Father, and my works are my Father’s doing. Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me, but if you find that difficult, at least believe the evidence I have given you.
Remember also the good news I have already promised you: Everyone who asks, receives. Everyone who seeks, finds. And for everyone who knocks, the door will open!
RECOGNITION AND REALITY
Matthew 16, 17
After two years of continuous ministry, Jesus decided to take us for a short trip away from Galilee. We went to a beach town on the Mediterranean, where the Roman governor lived and where some of the foreign army was stationed. We also saw the idolatrous temples in Caesarea Philippi and after we walked past a statue of Caesar, Jesus began an important conversation with us.
“Many times you have heard me refer to myself as ‘the Son of Man.’ Perhaps you wonder why. I want to ask you something. What do people think that I mean by the ’Son of Man?’ And what are people saying about me? What have you heard?”
“We’ve heard several things. We don’t think that people really understand what you mean.”
“I’ve heard people say that you are a prophet like John the Baptist.”
“Others tell us that you remind them of Jeremiah.”
“We’ve also taken note that some people are talking about ‘Elijah.’ But they don’t really seem to know whether you are or are not.”
“I see. And what about you? What do you believe? I have never asked you this before. You have been with me for two years, and yet I have not raised this question. I’d like to know what you think? Who do you say that I am?”
As usual Peter was the first to speak, while we were still pondering the question. Peter answered straight out: “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God!” A silence fell on us at the impact of those words. It was one of those moments we would never forget, because Jesus confirmed Peter’s momentous confession. This is what he now revealed to us:
Happy are you, Simon son of Jonah. You are very fortunate, not because you discovered this truth on your own, but because my Father in heaven has blessed you. My Father has revealed this to you. The Son of Man is the Messiah. I am the Son of the living God. My Father has sent me into the world. That is who I am. Never forget that your insight did not bring you to this faith but this revelation is a gift from above!
Now I tell you that you will no longer be called Simon, but Peter. As you already know, ‘Peter’ means ‘rock.’ Because you have confessed who I am, you are solid like rock, and on this rock I will build my church, the fellowship of those who believe in the Son of the living God -those who follow me. My church includes all those who have been called out of the world, who have received grace and mercy. The gates of death will not have the power to keep them from eternal life.
I have more to disclose. I will also give to all you apostles the keys of the kingdom of heaven. Yes, the keys. What does this mean? It means that you will be able to unlock doors and throw them open for anyone who wants to enter! Whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven. This authority I now give to you as you proclaim the good news!
But I must insist on something else. I do not want you to talk about what I have just made known to you. Do not tell anyone about our conversation. I do not want you to inform people that I am the Messiah, the Son of the living God. Don’t ask me why I insist on this right now. I have my reasons. You must do what I say. All you need to know is that the time will come when you will announce publicly that I am the Son of God. The time to bear witness to your faith in me will come - later.
Now you need to hear something else of great importance. We will be going to Jerusalem. Not today or tomorrow, but soon. When we arrive there, I will not be received with open arms. At first it may look as if we will gain approval and acceptance, but it will not last. The religious leaders will persecute and then reject me. I will be opposed by the establishment, the chief priests and the teachers of the law. The outcome of all this condemnation will lead to my death. I am telling you now, before it all comes to pass that they will crucify the Son of God. I realize that you do not expect to hear this at all. You are shocked by what I am saying, but this is how it must be. I have come to fulfill what is written in the law. But I also want you to know that the cross will not be the end for me. Three days later I will be resurrected. Yes, I will be raised to life again. I am telling you about these events before they will happen, for this is my Father’s will.
Then Peter took Jesus aside. He could not believe what he had just heard. Yes, the same Peter, the rock, who had confessed Jesus as the Son of the living God wanted to “set him straight.”
“Lord, listen to me. This will never happen to you,” Peter whispered in a low voice. “This is not possible. It’s unthinkable. You are the Messiah of Israel. The Messiah cannot die. You are to be crowned King! How can you be crucified? How can anyone do this to the Son of the living God? This is not the way things are supposed to work out in Jerusalem!”
Jesus would have none of it. He rebuked Peter and even addressed the Devil who was tempting him through his apostle!
Get behind me, Satan! You do not desire the things of God, but only what is in your fiendish, evil mind. You are a stumbling block to me. You do not want what God wants. You oppose anything and everything that is good and right and true. You only want what rises up from below and not what is revealed from above.
As for you, Peter, I know that what I said has alarmed you, but when you begin to say things like you just did, you are no longer inspired by the Spirit of God. No, no. You have become an instrument of Satan since you have blatantly and bluntly contradicted my words. This cannot be of God, and therefore I will have none of it. Yes, I am about to suffer in Jerusalem, be ridiculed and judged, and they will surely hang me on a cross. That is the way it will be, and I cannot avoid offering my life as a sacrifice.
But now I want to reveal still more to you because you are my friends. Whoever wants to be my disciple must also deny himself or herself. Whoever wants to be my disciple needs to take up the cross, yes, just as I will, for to that I invite all who will follow me. I do not call you to ease and pleasure, but to hardship and denial and even sacrifice. This is the truth: anyone who wants to save his or her life will lose it in the long run, but anyone who is willing to lose his or her life for my sake will find it! That is my call to discipleship.
Remember that you cannot serve two masters. You cannot be my disciple and also indulge in Satan’s tempting offers. I want you to consider this: What good will it be for you to gain the whole world - even if you could - and thereby forfeit your own soul? What value do you place on your soul? Would you betray yourself for a price? Is there anything you can possibly give in exchange for your soul? Meditate on those questions, and you will discover what it means to become my disciples. In spite of the suffering you may experience, remember always that you have been given eternal life! The day will come when the Son of Man will arrive in his Father’s glory and the angels will be with me. On that day I will reward everyone according to what that person has done. But when that judgment day arrives, it will be too late to change. This is why I invite everyone to come now and become my disciples. Eternity hangs in the balance! Yours is the choice.
One more thing. Some of you who are standing right here, right now, will not die before you will see the Son of Man coming in his Kingdom. Oh yes, that is true. Some of you will be given a vision, and that very soon!
We were befuddled, to say the least. We didn’t know what to make of his new teaching. Crucifixion and suffering? Follow him, no matter what the consequences? But then, a week later Jesus took James, Peter and John up a mountain. When they reached the top something amazing happened.
Jesus was transfigured before them! Brilliant light shone from his face and body. His whole being glowed through his clothing. They had to turn away and cover their eyes. Suddenly they saw two men talking with Jesus. They had no idea where these men had come from, but somehow they realized that these two were Moses and Elijah. They had apparently arrived to prepare Jesus for the coming encounter in Jerusalem.
Peter, who was blinking because of the brightness, started to babble: “Lord, it is good for us all to be here. And what a meeting this must be for you with Moses and Elijah. Now I could put up three shelters here to shield us from the elements. One for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.”
Shelters? He didn’t know what he was talking about. Shelters? Why? Peter stopped babbling because a brilliant cloud hovered above them. They looked up and actually heard a voice from the cloud: “This is my Son whom I love. I am well pleased with him. Listen to him.”
The three were scared. They fell with their faces to the ground, alarmed and terrified. When they looked up the sky looked clear, and Moses and Elijah had vanished. Jesus encouraged them, gently:
“Get up. Don’t be afraid. You have heard the voice of God and you are still alive! We are going down to join the others, but don’t tell people what you have just experienced on this mountain. I mean it. Don’t talk about this vision. The time will come when you can disclose many things, when you are free to share the good news with the world, but not yet. After I have risen from the dead, you will be free to testify to everything you have experienced.”
When we returned to the people who were waiting for Jesus down below, a man anxiously approached Jesus. He was obviously troubled. He sounded urgent. “Lord, have mercy on my son,” he started. “He has seizures and he suffers all the time. He can’t control himself. Sometimes he walks right into the fire and sometimes he falls into the water. We’ve had to rescue him a number of times. I just brought him to your disciples, but they were unable to heal my boy. Please, Lord, can you help us?” Jesus looked around.
“You unbelieving generation, you have no faith, do you? How long do I need to remain among you? How long must I put up with you? Bring this boy to me. I will do what I can for him. My Father will give me the power.”
Then he simply addressed the demon: “Come out of the boy, you evil spirit!” The demon left at once, the boy was healed and in his right mind. We could actually see what the Lord had done, because a change came over the boy. It was a miracle, a healing from God!
After the people had left, we couldn’t wait to ask Jesus about this. What had happened here? “Why couldn’t we drive out the demon? Why couldn’t we do that? How did you do that, when we were completely powerless?”
Jesus answered:
Listen carefully. What you have just experienced is the result of little faith. As you were trying to help him, you did not really believe anything would change, did you? You said some words, but you doubted in your heart that the boy would be healed. Isn’t that the truth?
Look. If you believe and have a little faith even as small as a mustard seed, you can go to that mountain over there and tell it: ‘Move from here to there.’ It will move! I know what that sounds like to you. You are saying to yourselves, ‘Oh no, no, no. That can never be. It won’t happen. Move mountains? Not me. That’s impossible.’
Why is that impossible? All things are possible with God. You don’t believe that? Why not? Have faith in the living God. God is here with us. Even to the end of the world. If you believe and do not doubt in your heart, nothing will be impossible for you. I assure you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you will receive, and it will be true. But if while you are praying and suddenly remember that you are holding something against anyone else, first forgive that person, so that your Father in heaven may forgive your sins. Then pray in faith, sincerely.
There is still more. All who believe in me will do the works I have been doing. Yes, the Holy Spirit will be in you and you will work what I have, and even more. You will attempt greater deeds, because I will no longer be with you. I am going to the Father, and I will send you into the world for this purpose, to bring the good news of the kingdom everywhere, to everyone.
Now I also make you this promise. I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son! Ask me anything and I will do it. Anything means anything in harmony with the eternal purpose of God. That is how your faith will bring honor to the living God. Remember that your insight and intuition did not provide you with faith. Every revelation comes from my Father. Every good gift is from above. That is why and how you have received the confidence that I am the Son of God. Yes, I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, because I also hold the keys of death and Hades.
THE GREAT AND THE SMALL
Matthew 18, 19
One day as many people were listening to Jesus, we asked him a question: “Who is the greatest in the kingdom of God? Who will be the most honored there?”
Jesus was seated and motioned for some children to come over. Children were often brought by their parents who came to listen to him. Some of the younger children reacted immediately. They were smiling as they approached without hesitation. One little girl even climbed up in his lap. She was probably two or three years old. The others stood close to him, by his knees. What Jesus said to us then certainly took everyone by surprise:
Do you see these children? Of course you do. I tell you that unless you change and become like a small child you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Why is this true? Because these children are trusting and they believe me. They are gentle and simple and humble and open. Anyone who is willing to become child-like but not childish, will be the greatest in the kingdom. That is not what people normally consider greatness, of course. But you need to realize something else. Whoever welcomes one child like this in my name welcomes me!”
The children were listening attentively. The little girl in Jesus’ lap was looking up at Jesus.
If anyone causes one of these little ones who believes in me to stumble, it would be better for those people if a large stone were hung around their neck and they were drowned in the depth of the sea. Yes, I am talking about child abuse, violence, cruelty and neglect. Offenses against children will be severely punished. Do not discriminate against children, do not exploit the innocents who trust in me. Woe to the world because of the crimes and evils that cause misery and pain and suffering of any kind. Such things will take place in a fallen world, but woe to the person through whom the offense comes!
Never despise one of these little ones. I tell you that their angels are in heaven where they always behold the face of my Father. These little ones are constantly in my Father’s care.
Now, what do you think? Listen as I tell you a short story. Once upon a time there was someone who owned one hundred sheep, but one of his sheep wandered away. You know how sheep can get lost, don‘t you? It happens all the time. Will the shepherd forget about that lone sheep? Or will he leave the ninety-nine and start looking for the one that has wandered off? Yes, he will search for the one until he discovers where it has gone, and when he finds it, he will be happier about recovering that stray one than all the others who never wandered away. Isn’t that true? In the same way your Father in heaven is not willing that anyone should perish - not any of these little ones! I assure you that all of heaven rejoices when one of the lost is found and saved.
Since I mentioned offenses a moment ago, here is what I want to teach you about handling problems like that. If your brother or sister does something that is wrong and hurts you, go to that person and talk about the fault directly, just between the two of you. If they will listen to you, the problem can be resolved, and you have won your brother or sister.
But if they refuse to listen to you, then take one or two with you as your witnesses and go over the problem again. Then, if that person will not admit or confess, you will need to take the case before the people of God. If that does not bring healing because the offender repudiates the church, then let them be an outcast and like a heathen to you. Remember, I have given you the right to forgive and forbid people. You have received authority so that which is bound on earth will be bound in heaven and what you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven. I also make another promise to you that where two or three of you are gathered together in my name, there I will be with you, in your midst.”
Then Peter asked Jesus another question.
“Lord, you are talking about sin and forgiveness, and I have a question about this: How many times should I forgive someone who sins against me? As you know, the rabbis teach that we ought to forgive people three times. That seems reasonable enough, but do you think we should do more than that? Say, forgive seven times?”
“That is a good question,” Jesus answered. “You probably think that you are going too far, when you suggest that forgiving someone seven times is more than enough. Well, Peter, don’t put a limit on forgiveness. Does God put a limit on forgiving you? Would you want him to? Of course not. So I tell you, don’t forgive someone seven times, but seventy times seven! Yes, I’m serious, because this means, you are not to keep a count of the number of times you forgive someone!
So, let me tell you a parable about this. And remember that a parable is more than a story because it contains truth about the kingdom.
The kingdom of heaven is like a king who wanted to settle some accounts of his workers. In going over the books, the king discovered someone who owed him $2,000,000! Yes, incredible as this sounds, this person had stolen over quite some time from the king. Of course he could never pay back those millions, not on his salary. The king summoned him to appear, and ordered that he and his wife and children were to be sold into slavery, and that all his possessions were to be sold.
The man fell on his knees and begged the king for mercy. ‘Be patient with me, and I will pay you back everything,’ he pleaded. He realized that he could never repay this huge debt, but he debased himself before the throne. Then a remarkable thing happened. The king had a change of heart. He expressed mercy on his servant and forgave him the entire sum! Yes, he did, so that the worker was not sold into slavery nor did he lose anything. The king not only cancelled the $2,000,000 but assumed the loss himself. The servant was shocked by this turn of events, and before walking away, thanked the king profusely.
That same afternoon this same servant found a fellow worker who owed him some money. It was about $2000. He grabbed the other fellow by the collar and ordered him to pay back what he owed. The man fell on his knees and begged him: ‘I can’t right now. Please be patient with me, and I will pay you back everything in time.’ But the man refused to forgive. Instead he threatened that he would take that fellow worker to court and have him thrown in jail. He expected every cent of the debt to be repaid.
While this was going on some people overheard this whole episode. They went to the king and told him everything. So the king called the servant back in. ‘Do you realize what you have done?’ he asked him.
‘No, what have I done?’ the servant replied.
‘I cancelled your great debt. All of it! The $2,000,000 which you owed is no longer on the books. Do you remember that?’
‘Of course, Sir. I will always remember and be grateful for that, Sir.’
‘So you remember that? And you have a friend who owed you, how much was it?’
‘He owed me $2000, Sir.’
‘You were deeply in debt to me for $2,000,000 which you could never repay, but he could have returned to you that $2000 in time. Listen to me. Since I cancelled your unbelievable debts and showed you mercy, should you not have shown mercy on your friend? Have you never heard that the merciful will receive mercy? Since you cannot forgive others, you will no longer be forgiven!’
With that, the king handed the man over to the warden to be tortured, until he would pay back every penny. And this is how my heavenly Father will treat everyone of you, if you are unwilling to forgive others - from your heart!”
Then Jesus hugged the children, and they went back to their parents. But the word got around. Soon, more and more parents were bringing their children for Jesus to bless. We actually tried to stop all this. We didn’t want them to bother our teacher, because we considered that this attention to children was not that important. Had we misunderstood Jesus? Of course we had! Jesus went right on encouraging those who brought children to him.
“Let the little ones come to me. Don’t try to stop them. Haven’t I taught you that unless you become like a little child, you will not enter the kingdom? The kingdom of heaven belongs to them, just as it belongs to the poor in spirit, the humble, the merciful and those who are hungry and thirsty for righteousness. Come little ones, and I will place my hands on you and bless you. May God in heaven be with each and everyone of you!”
Then someone approached Jesus with a pointed question. He started like this: “Teacher, what good thing must I do in order to receive eternal life?”
Jesus could tell from the man’s appearance that he was well to do. This person also seemed confident and made a good impression. People standing around, watched him with respect.
“Why do you ask me about what is good?” Jesus replied. “Is there a reason for that? There is only One who is good, and that is God. Now about your question. You want to know what you must do to enter eternal life. This is my answer. You need to keep the commandments of God.”
“I understand that, Sir,” the man answered. “But I would like to know, which ones should I keep? There are so many commandments and traditions, aren’t there?”
“Yes, there are many commandments, but let’s begin with those given by God to Moses. I’m sure you remember them: You shall not murder. You shall not commit adultery. You shall not steal. You shall not give false testimony. You are to honor your father and mother. And there is also one about loving your neighbor as yourself.’”
“I certainly agree with all that,” the man answered. “The fact is that I have always lived by these commandments. I have done my best to keep them. What I want to know is, what else is there for me? Do I need anything else to enter into eternal life?”
“Yes, there is more,” Jesus answered. “If you want to be complete in your love to God and also your neighbor, go and sell your possessions. Yes, all of your possessions, and give everything away to the poor. If you are willing to make this sacrifice, you are going to receive treasure in heaven. And then there is one more thing: accept my invitation to come and follow me.”
The man lowered his eyes. He could not believe what he had heard. Sell all his possessions? He shook his head in dismay, turned and walked away. Jesus watched him. It was obvious that Jesus cared about him, but that person did not realize that. He had been challenged, and he was unable to give up his way of life. When he had left, Jesus realized that we were disturbed by what we had just witnessed. That rich man would have been a desirable follower of the Lord. Jesus talked with us about it right away.
“Listen. I want to make something clear to you. It is very difficult for those who are rich to enter the kingdom of heaven. You’re surprised to hear that, aren’t you? The problem is that the lives of many are wrapped up in their possessions. Look: it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle - yes, picture that literally - easier than it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God.”
Peter had to challenge that, as usual: “If what you say is true, and we certainly believe it is, who then can be saved? If those who are able to give liberally to the temple are not accepted, then who will be? What about us?”
“It is impossible for human beings to save themselves. Hear me - it is impossible! There is no way that anyone can earn salvation. You didn’t earn eternal life. But with God all things are possible. What you cannot do, God can. Believe me, the Father is Savior and Lord. God can save the lost!”
But Peter was not finished. “Lord, when you asked this man to sell everything and follow you, he couldn’t do it. But when you invited us, this is what we have done, isn‘t it? We have given up everything as your disciples. Remember that day we abandoned our fishing boats and parted from our families in Capernaum? We have forsaken all to become your disciples. Now, what I want to know is - what rewards will there be for us? Do we receive anything because we have turned our backs on the past and followed you?”
Peter has a way of getting right to the point. Jesus looked at him and then spoke kindly but emphatically to all of us. “All right. That’s a fair question. And you know that I always tell you the truth. When the Son of Man comes to sit on his throne of glory, you who have followed me will be there also. You will, in fact, each be placed on a throne, and you will have the honor of judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
But there is more for you and for anyone else who follows me. Everyone who has made sacrifices, anyone who has left family, brothers or sisters or fathers or mothers or wives or children or property for my sake will receive one hundred times as much, and on top of that eternal life. Yes, you will be rewarded not one for one, but one hundred for one! That is the blessing of God for the humble, the peacemakers, the pure in heart who are not necessarily looking for any rewards. The joy of heaven is in unexpected surprises!
Not that everyone will be rewarded. There will be a judgment on a day of disturbing revelations. Eyes will be opened, and as I have told you before, there will be weeping and grinding of teeth. You see, many who think they are surely going to be first will actually be last, and many who are certain they are to be last will be brought forward and placed first! Many who believe they are high will be brought down low, and those who consider themselves low will be lifted up high. All I have told you is true!
Now here is my last parable for today about the kingdom of God. You will need to ask for wisdom to understand this one. The kingdom is like a landowner who went out early in the morning to hire laborers for his vineyard. He offered to pay them $75 for the day and they agreed. It sounded like a fair wage, and they were glad to find work. They went and started to pick grapes.
At nine that morning the owner returned to the town square and saw others standing around, not doing anything. ‘Do you want to work?’ he asked them. They nodded ‘yes.’ ‘Then you can also go into my vineyard, and I will pay you whatever is right.’ They were also glad to be employed and started to pick grapes willingly.
It was about noon when the owner was looking again for laborers and once more at three in the afternoon. At both of those times he found manual workers loitering in the square and hired them also. The later in the day the less eager they were to go, but they ambled out among the grapevines anyway.
Even at five in the afternoon he came once again. There were still men to be found and he asked them: ‘Why are you waiting all day, doing nothing?’
‘Well, no one has asked us to work,’ they answered.
‘I will take you right now. Go to my vineyard and start picking grapes.’
They didn’t move fast, but they did join all the others. Now these last ones only worked about an hour because the sun started to disappear over the horizon and evening was coming on. The owner of the vineyard told his supervisor: ‘Line up the workers and pay them their wages. Begin with the last ones and go down the line until you get to the first ones that worked all day long.’
So those who went out at five in the afternoon were first in line and they received $75. They were very surprised at this, but of course, they didn’t object. $75 for one hour’s work? Why should they question the boss?
Next came those who were employed at three o‘clock. They also received $75, and they were surprised, too. But they didn’t object either.
Now the workers who had been sweating in the field all day long watched all this, and they thought to themselves that they would surely receive more. But what were they given? The same $75! Not a penny more.
So those last at the end of the line turned on the landowner and started to complain: ‘Sir, the men who were hired at 5:00 o’clock worked only one hour, and you gave them the same as us. We’ve been sweating out in your vineyard all day, picking in the heat of the day. Surely we ought to receive more than those who only worked one or two hours. Something is not right here, Sir! Something is not fair!’
‘Not fair?’ answered the owner. ’ I am not treating you unfairly. Why do you think that? Did you not agree with me this morning that you would be paid $75? You seemed to be OK with that, this morning. So, take your money and go home. You have earned it. But if I want to give the same to those who worked less than you, what is that to you? Don’t I have the right to do what I want with my own money? Why do you find fault with me? What is your problem? If it had not been for those other workers, you would not have complained to me, but would have gone home happy. Isn’t that true? So, why are you jealous of them? Ask yourselves: are we being jealous and resentful because this owner is generous?’
A strange story, you say? Perhaps. Remember it is a parable of the kingdom. This is not the way to operate a business in the world. If you try it, you will certainly run into trouble with the unions and authorities.
So why did I tell you this parable? What does this story mean? Because in the kingdom of God the first will be last and the last will be first, the high will be put down low, and the low will be lifted high.
But the parable also illustrates something else. Those who belong to the kingdom will all be remunerated the same! What does that mean? Since you have ears to hear, listen: Everyone is admitted into the kingdom of God because of the grace of God. By the grace of God you receive eternal life. No one will earn a place by good works. By grace that you are saved. Eternal life is a free gift for all who put their faith in me. The children of the kingdom are awarded eternal life. Is that not sufficient?
Yes, there may be additional rewards, but it is by the gift of grace alone that you will enter and belong in the kingdom. And that is true for everyone. By grace you will obtain eternal life and never-ending joy. And since this is true, what more do you want?
Yes, what more could you possibly want?
JERUSALEM WITH AUTHORITY
Matthew 20, 21
When we began our walk to Jerusalem, Jesus took us aside and repeated again the reason why we were heading to the big city.
“I want to remind you about what will happen when we get to Jerusalem. The Son of Man will be delivered to the chief priests and the teachers of the law. They will condemn him to death. Then I will be handed over to the Gentiles, and they will judge me and after inflicting punishment on me, will crucify me. But my death will not be the end, for on the third day the Son of Man will be raised from the dead!
You don’t believe me, do you? You don’t understand what I am talking about, do you? No matter how often I tell you this, you don’t seem to grasp the reason for this means of salvation and redemption. Believe me, this is the Father‘s will.”
As we continued on our way the mother of James and John, two of the apostles, approached Jesus with a request. She even knelt down before him.
“What is it you want from me?” Jesus asked her.
“I want to make a little request, only one,” she said. “I would like to ask that you give my sons, James and John, the places of honor when you announce your kingdom. One can sit on your right and the other on your left when you arrive in Jerusalem.”
“You don’t really know what you are asking of me,” Jesus answered. He turned to James and John who were standing with her and asked them:
“Do you think you can drink the cup I am going to drink? Do you believe that you really know what will happen in Jerusalem?”
“Yes, we can,” they replied. “We believe in you. We are your disciples. We will always be faithful to you. Yes, we can drink from the same cup and follow wherever you go.”
Jesus looked at them again. “I can tell that you are serious about this. You are indeed my disciples and yes, you will drink from my cup. But to sit at my right and left in places of honor is not mine to give. This kingdom is the kingdom of God! Only my Father has the authority to bestow honors.”
When the other disciples heard about this request, we were all angry with James and John. We were not only upset, but jealous. Who do they think they are to ask for special privileges? Everyone of us thought that we should be recognized and rewarded! But Jesus helped us to overcome our envy and presumption and to deal with our folly. He looked at us each one and explained to us how things would be very different in the kingdom of God.
“Have you watched how people treat each other in the world? Have you seen how the rulers of the Gentiles scramble for power and lord it over everybody else? Most people plot and scheme for high positions. And when someone else is promoted, they envy them because they reason that they have been overlooked. The world around us is engaged in a continuous power struggle which leads to shoving, pushing, cheating, and manipulating people.. Selfish desires, rising from evil hearts, feed greed and ambition!
The kingdom of God will never be anything like that. Everything like that which takes place on earth will be reversed. The first will be last and yes, even the last will be first. The high will be brought low and the low will be lifted on high. Do you understand this? The kingdom of God is not given to those who are aggressive and succeed because they fight for position and power. I reming you again that the kingdom is for the poor in spirit, the humble and the merciful, the pure in heart and hose who live in peace. The kingdom does not promote hatred and malice, but compassion and kindness. It is a place for holiness and humbleness.
You call me Lord and Master and you are right, because that is who I am. But have you noticed that as your Lord and Master, I have been among you as a servant? That is how you are to love one another, even as I have loved you. I am among you to demonstrate how life is to be lived - now and in the kingdom of God!
But I am also here for another reason. I have come to give my life as a ransom for many. The Son of Man will offer himself as the atonement for the sin of the world. This is the holy will of God, and I must fulfill it. This ‘ransom for many’ means salvation, redemption and the forgiveness of sins.
Let me say it plainly. Because of my crucifixion the sacrifices on the altar in the temple will come to an end. There is no need to continue blood offerings, when the Lamb of God takes away the sin of the world. This ’Lamb’ makes an end to all necessary sacrifices for sin.
But there is more - the will of God is not “my fate.” The will of God is not a command from which I cannot escape. I am not being forced to submit to the cross or compelled to drink this cup of death. No, I choose to obey my Father and to drink the cup. I choose the cross freely, since there is no merit in a sacrifice of duty or obligation. I choose to cooperate with the redeeming purpose of my Father in love and obedience.
Now as we are approaching Jerusalem, I want two of you to go into the village ahead of us. On the main street you will see a donkey tied up to a tree with her colt. Untie both of them and bring them to me. If anyone objects and asks what you are doing, just say, ‘the Lord has need of them.’ They will allow you to take the donkeys. Bring them here.”
The disciples did exactly as the Lord had instructed. They returned with a donkey and a colt. We laid some clothes on them and Jesus sat on the young one that had never been ridden. As we neared the gates of Jerusalem, more and more people joined us and children also. They were shouting: “Hosanna to the Son of David. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.”
Having passed through the gates of the city, Jesus rode straight through the narrow streets to the temple grounds. Arriving there he looked around and was disturbed by the sight. Many goings on troubled him. Loud merchants were busy exchanging money and selling temple sacrifices. They were obviously profiting and taking advantage of the poor. The house of the Lord had become a circus. Jesus could not accept the desecration of the temple. He overturned the tables of the money changers, flushed out the animals and drove the merchants and greedy priests from the temple grounds.
“It is written my House will be called a house of prayer,” Jesus shouted, “but you are turning it into a den of thieves. This is not what the holy God commands! This is not what God expects! How can you take advantage of people and stuff your pockets in this sacred place?”
Needless to say, the actions of Jesus angered the religious leaders. But others like the blind and the lame and needy people surrounded him and he touched and healed them by the power of the Spirit. Even some children who were watching became excited by all this and they shouted for joy when they saw these signs. “Hosanna to the Son of David,” resounded all over the temple!
This infuriated the priests and teachers of the law even more. “Do you hear what these children are shouting?” they screamed at Jesus. “Do you hear? Tell them to be quiet and stop all this racket.”
Jesus answered the priests: “Yes, I hear what these children are saying. But have you not read the word of God? Do you not remember what the Scriptures teach? Let me remind you: ‘From the lips of children and infants you have ordained praise.’ So I say, allow them to praise God! Don’t stop them. I will always welcome little children!”
With that we left the temple and went out to Bethany for the night. But the next day Jesus decided to return. The religious leaders were expecting him and were very upset with him. No wonder. Jesus had interfered with their lucrative business. Their profitable temple market had disappeared.
They were furious: “By what authority are you doing these things? How can you rid the temple of animal sacrifices that are ordained by God? Are we not supposed to offer sacrifices to God?” They were blunt, even belligerent. “Who gave you this authority to act as you just did, in our sacred temple?”
Jesus realized that he did not want to argue with them. If he had replied that his Father gave him this authority, they would have flatly contradicted him. After all, they were the servants of God, and not this outsider from Galilee. This is how Jesus handled their loaded questions:
“I will also ask you something. If you answer my question, then I will answer yours - your question about who gives me authority to do what I did. Here is my question. You remember John who was preaching and baptizing at the Jordan river? Some people called him a prophet and went out to hear him. My question is this: from where did John the Baptist receive his authority? Was it from heaven or was it of human origin?”
They were at a loss how to answer him. They discussed it among themselves. “What are we going to tell him?” “I don’t know.” “What do you think?” “All right. Here’s what I think.” One of the priests took over. “If we say, ’from heaven,’ he will ask us, ’then why didn’t you believe him?’ But if we say, ’the authority came from human sources,’ the people won’t like our answer, and they will turn against us. So, we’ve got a problem here.”
“We sure do.” Then they said to Jesus: “To be honest, we are unable to answer your question. We don’t really know from where John received his authority.”
“Then I don’t need to answer your question either,” Jesus said. “But wait a minute. I will tell you a story and you tell me what you think about it. There was a man who had two sons. He went to the first and said: ‘Son, go and work today in my field.’
‘No, I’m not going to,’ the son answered. ’I won’t do that.’ But a little later he changed his mind, and he actually went into the field.
In the meantime, the father approached the second son. He asked him the same thing. That son was more positive: ‘I will go, Sir. You bet, you can count on me.’ But then he didn’t go. He busied himself doing something else and never acted on his promise. My question to you is this: which one of these two did what his father wanted? What do you think?”
“That’s not a difficult question,” they answered. “It’s quite obvious. The first son did his father’s will. Even though he objected at first, he did go to work in the field.”
“You are absolutely right,” Jesus replied. “Now a moment ago, we were talking about the ministry of John. When John came preaching righteousness, people traveled to hear him from everywhere. Even tax collectors who work for the Romans and prostitutes whom you have written off as sinners. They came from many places and they repented. They were baptized, and that is how they have entered the kingdom of God!
These forgiven sinners are like the son who said to his father, ‘I won’t go into your field,’ but he did anyway. They disobeyed and rejected God in the past, but now they have been converted, and they believe. As for you religious leaders, you consider yourself the servants of God and are confident that you have faith. You promise the Lord, ‘I go, Sir,’ but you don’t go. No, you don’t. When John came preaching righteousness, you went to hear him, but you did not believe, even though the tax collectors and prostitutes did. You witnessed their conversions at the Jordan, but you did not change your ways. Why not? Because you don’t accept that John’s authority was given him by God, do you? I ask you, how else was John able to reach the outcasts and bring them to faith and new life? Yes, the authority for John’s ministry came on the prophet from God.
And now here is another parable. There was a landowner who planted a vineyard. He put a wall around it, dug a winepress and built a watchtower. In short, he did everything that needed to be done. Then he leased out the vineyard to farmers and moved away. With the coming of harvest time, he sent his servants to the tenants to collect his portion of the fruit. But these farmers didn’t behave well. They didn’t like the interference, so they seized the owner’s servants and mistreated them. One was beaten, another was imprisoned and another was physically abused.
Naturally the owner became upset with all this, but that did not stop him. He decided to send more servants, and the tenants treated them worse. They were hostile and aggressive and even killed some of those servants. The owner wondered what he could possibly do next. Then he made his decision: ‘I will send my son,’ he said, ’surely, they will respect my son. I certainly expect them to receive him!” But when the tenants saw the son, they conspired against him as well. They told one another: “You realize, don’t you, that this is the heir? Let’s take him into custody, and then get rid of him. We will have to kill him.”
“Good idea,” someone replied. “With the son dead and gone, the inheritance will become ours!”
“Exactly.” So they detained the son, threw him out of the vineyard and killed him.
Now here is my question for you: “What do you think the owner of the vineyard will do when he returns to his property? How will he judge them?”
“He will bring those scoundrels to a miserable end,” they replied. “That’s is the right thing to do. And then he will rent out his vineyard to others, who will give him his true share of the crops at harvest time.”
“You are absolutely right,” Jesus answered. “And that is exactly what will take place. Now. Have you read this prophecy in the Scriptures? Do you remember: ‘The stone which the builders rejected has become the cornerstone. This is the Lord’s doing, and it is marvelous in our eyes. Anyone who comes to this stone in repentance and faith will be broken and saved, but on whoever the stone will fall, it will crush them completely.’
I will explain the parable to you. God is the Owner of Israel, the vineyard, and the chosen people are the tenants. The servants whom the Owner sends are the prophets of old. Those prophets were rejected and persecuted and some were put to death. Then the Owner sends his Son, and when the son comes, you scheme to destroy him also. Even now you are planning to do away with the Son of the Owner!
Therefore I tell you this: the kingdom will be taken away from you and given to others who will respect the Owner. So it will come to pass that ‘the stone which the builders rejected, becomes the cornerstone!’ The kingdom of God is to be taken away from you and given to those who will honor the Owner.
Now, this conversation started with a question about my authority. The answer to that question is also found in this parable. Do you see it? The owner of the vineyard sends his son to the tenants. You have heard me say more than once, I have come from the Father into the world. My Father is the one who has given me authority, but you do not believe me. You refuse to come to me. You study the Scriptures because you think that in them you will have eternal life. But these very Scriptures testify about me! How can you believe when you eagerly look for admiration from one another and for praise from people, when you do not seek the honor of the heavenly Father?
Now, here is my last parable for today: The kingdom of God is like a king who prepares a wedding banquet for his son. Yes, this is another story about the son of a king. The king sends servants to all those invited to the banquet imploring them to attend. But they not only fail to respond to the invitation, they deliberately ignore them and refuse to attend.
Then the King sends more servants and insists that they apply more pressure: “Tell those who have been invited that I have prepared my dinner. My oxen and fattened calves have been butchered, and everything is ready. This is a great occasion! Come, join in our celebration. All are welcome! Repent and believe the good news, for the festivities are about to begin.”
Again, they pay no attention. Some send their excuses. ‘I need to go out to a field I have just purchased. I need to see it. This is something I cannot put off.’
‘I‘ve promised my family a ride in the country this weekend. I can‘t disappoint my children. Sorry, but we simply cannot make it.’
‘I’m getting married in the morning and we will be on our honeymoon. It’s all been planned. You understand that, don’t you? You must excuse us. We cannot come to your wedding.”
Some of those who were invited became hostile and slaughtered the servants of the king. In justice the king sent his army to destroy those murderers and burned down their city. Still the king carried out his plans for his son’s wedding and informed his servants: “The wedding banquet is ready. We will not cancel it, but those who were invited will not receive another invitation. Go out into the villages and the towns wherever you can find people. Urge them to come, one and all. It doesn’t matter whether they are good or not so good, rich or poor, smart or not. I want this hall to be filled for my son’s wedding!”
And so it came to pass that all kinds of people responded. They were seated at the festive tables, when the king entered to welcome the guests. He looked around and saw someone who was not wearing proper wedding clothes. The man looked like he had come straight from work. He had not even washed or cleaned up.
The king walked over to him and said, “My friend, how did you get in here without the proper clothing? Why are you looking like a slob?” The man was speechless. The King told the attendants: “Tie up his hands and feet, and throw him outside into the darkness. I assure you that at the judgment there will be weeping and the grinding of teeth.”
You see, many are invited, but few are chosen.
CONFRONTATION AND CONCERN
Matthew 22, 23
After Jesus cleaned out the temple area, the religious leaders were irritated whenever Jesus came to teach in the temple grounds. They wanted to discredit him before the people, and they schemed how they might trip him up by raising difficult and convoluted questions.
First off appeared some of the spiritual Pharisees, who brought the Herodians with them. The Pharisees and Herodians are not really friends nor do they agree on much of anything. The Herodians are more political than religious in their views and they support king Herod. Not so the Pharisees.
“Teacher,” they began, “we know that you are a man of integrity. You explain the way of God in sincerity and in accordance with the law. You are not swayed by people, because you can see right through them.” It was obvious that they were trying to flatter him. “Tell us therefore, what is your opinion about paying taxes? Is it right to give the imperial tax to Caesar, or is it not necessary? What do you advise?”
Jesus saw through the problem at once. This question could not be answered, ‘yes, it is right’ or ‘no, it is not right.’ They backed him into a corner. If Jesus speaks out against paying taxes to the Romans, the Herodians will report him, and he will be arrested. If on the other hand, he insists that the Israelites contribute taxes to Caesar, then the people will consider him a pawn of the Romans, a false teacher. They will stop coming to listen to him.
“You are hypocrites!” Jesus answered. “You are trying to trap me into a yes or no answer, aren’t you? And you realize that neither a ‘yes or no’ is possible! I’ll tell you what - let me see the coin you use to pay the tax.”
They brought him a coin. He laid it in the palm of his hand, showed it to them and asked: “Whose image do you see here? Whose inscription?”
“Caesar’s” they replied.
“Of course. Therefore give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar.” He paused for a moment, but before they could argue with him, Jesus added: “And give to God what belongs to God!” That stopped them cold. They had not expected that twist to their question. As they walked away, the Sadducees approached him with a far different problem. The Sadducees are very liberal in their beliefs. For instance, they don’t believe in the resurrection from the dead, and they decided to test Jesus on a belief in resurrection, and fabricated an implausible situation.
They started like this: “Teacher, we want to ask you about something that Moses instructed us from the law. Moses taught that if a husband dies, and there are no children from that marriage, his brother must marry the widow. When children are born, he must raise them for his brother. Now there was a family of seven brothers. The first married a woman, but then he died before they had children, and so his brother did his duty and married the widow. But the brother also died and left the wife childless. Then the third brother took her to wife, but he also passed away. This continued all the way to the seventh brother. Finally the woman died also. You understand that all seven became husbands to this one woman. Now this is our question: since they all married her, whose wife will she be at the resurrection? Or to rephrase this question, if there is to be a resurrection of the dead, how can there be a fair resolution for all these seven brothers - in heaven?”
“I realize that you are asking this question because you don’t believe in the resurrection,” Jesus replied. “But you are wrong about that. When you do not accept what the Scriptures teach, you do not believe the Word of God, do you? Even more than that, by rejecting the resurrection from the dead you minimize the power of God. Do you not realize that God who made the world out of nothing can also bring life from death? Why do you place restrictions on the Almighty? Are you able to limit God? Is there anything God cannot do?
But there is something else I want to say to you. The kingdom of God will initiate a new and distinctive experience of glory. There will be no marriages in heaven, nor will there be giving in marriage. All who enter eternal life are like the angels in heaven. They will not be angels, but they will be like the angels in this, that they will not marry.
Furthermore about the resurrection of the body - have you not read what God says all through the Scriptures? God never states after the death of the fathers, ‘I was the God of Abraham and Isaac and Jacob.’ God declares ‘I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.’ It is plain to see that God is not the God of the dead, but God of the living!”
This ended the questioning, but only for the time being.. Soon the Pharisees returned with one of their legal advisors. This lawyer was a scholar, and he asked Jesus: “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the law of God?”
Jesus responded like this: “I realize that you are asking me a complex and often debated question. You surely know that God gave us ten commandments through Moses, but over the years devoted scholars have added six hundred more. You want me to choose only one from those six hundred, don’t you? All right, I will. This is the first commandment: You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul and with all your mind. And the second is like it: You are to love your neighbor as yourself. The entire law and the prophets are summed up by these two commandments.”
The lawyer accepted this answer, but he had not yet finished. “If you will allow me, Teacher, I would like to ask you a follow up question. Our scholars have debated this for centuries: ‘Who is your neighbor?” They have debated the meaning of ’neighbor.’ Now, what do you think? How far and how wide should we stretch ‘love of neighbor?’ In short, who really is my neighbor?”
“That is a good question,” Jesus answered. “So, I am going to tell you a story about a man who went down from Jerusalem to Jericho.”
“A man? Just any man?”
“Well, this man was an Israelite. You have probably heard that the road to Jericho is desolate and dangerous. This traveler fell into the hands of robbers. They stripped him of his clothing, took all his money, and then they beat him up and left him half dead by the side of the road.
Now a priest came from Jerusalem and saw this poor fellow lying there. As soon as he noticed him, he looked the other way and walked around him. He suddenly remembered that he had many things to do and didn’t have the time to help. Then a Levite passed by on the road and also saw the man. He couldn’t miss him, but he ignored him and hurried past because he had an urgent appointment in Jericho. And then a Samaritan came..."
“Who?”
“A Samaritan. That’s what I said. Not an Israelite.”
“Really?”
“Yes. This Samaritan saw the injured man and stopped. He had pity on him, took out some of the oil and wine he was carrying, poured it on the wounds and bandaged the victim’s sores. Then he put the man on his own donkey, brought him to the inn that is half way on that road, and paid for a room. He even made sure the man would rest comfortably that night. Before he left he actually gave the innkeeper more money and said, ’when I return I will pay you whatever other expenses you may need. Take good care of this poor fellow.’
Now since you asked, ‘who is my neighbor,‘ my question is this: Who of these three behaved like a neighbor to the man who fell among thieves?”
“Sir, you have changed the question on me, haven’t you? I asked you who should I consider my neighbor, and you tell me a story about someone who behaved like a good neighbor to someone. Obviously, he cared because he considered the victim was a human being and showed him mercy.”
“Of course. And now that you see what loving your neighbor really means, why don’t you go and do the same?”
As the crowd remained silent, Jesus raised his own question which he directed to the religious elite: “You look forward to the Messiah coming, don’t you? What do you believe about the Messiah? Whose son is he?”
“The Scriptures teach that the Messiah is the son of David,” answered the religious leaders.
“That is the answer I expected,” Jesus replied. “But is that all the Scriptures teach about the Messiah? If the Messiah is the son of David, how is it possible that David himself calls him ‘Lord?’ Yes, he does call him Lord. You read this in the Psalms: ‘The Lord said to my Lord: Sit at my right hand until I put your enemies under your feet.’ Do you realize that David is writing about God in heaven who is speaking to the Messiah on earth? And David calls him ‘my Lord!’ If therefore David calls him ‘Lord,’ how can he be his son?”
No one was able to answer that question, and that’s when they stopped asking him anything else. But Jesus had not yet finished. He addressed the people who had nearly filled up the temple grounds because they wanted to hear his teaching. Jesus spoke fearlessly about the establishment. His words were convincing and disturbing!
“The teachers of the law and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat. That is why you must do everything they tell you. But do not follow their example, because they do not practice what they preach. They are good at placing heavy burdens on your shoulders. They insist that everyone must follow their instructions, but they are not willing to lift a finger to help anyone. It is plain to see that these spiritual teachers do not keep the law themselves.
Everything they do is for show. They want people to notice how devout and dedicated they are. That is why they enlarge the boxes they wear on their foreheads and on their arms. They lengthen the tassels on their clothing. They are show offs and want to impress you by their piety.
Watch them and see how they scheme to gain places of honor at banquets. They expect to receive the most prominent seats in the synagogues. They are eager to be looked up to and to be greeted respectfully in the marketplace and everywhere else. They insist that people address them as ‘rabbi’ and ‘reverend’ and ‘doctor.’
I want to make something clear to all who desire to be my disciples: Don’t be called ‘rabbi’ or ‘teacher.’ Don’t expect recognition. Don’t seek praise from people. When you become disciples, you are now brothers and sisters who belong to my family. You have only one Master, one Lord. Therefore you must not address anyone on earth as your spiritual ‘father,’ because you have only one Father, who is in heaven.
Neither are you to call anyone else ‘teacher.’ Why do I insist on this? Because you have one Teacher, and that is the Messiah. Remember what I have told you all along: those who desire to be great among you need to go all-out to become servants. Why? Because all who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted. Meditate on this way of life. Put it into practice, for I assure you that in the kingdom of God the first will be last and the last will be first!
As for you who enjoy the recognition that comes with being spiritual leaders, I realize that my words will disturb you. I intend to arouse you and awaken you to justice and righteousness and truth, so that you may truly serve the living God.
Woe to you, teachers of the law, you Pharisees and you hypocrites. You are frauds because you pretend to be something that you are not. You do not really believe what you profess to believe. You are deceitful, because you shut the doors of the kingdom in people’s faces, and then you yourselves don’t even enter in! And what is worse, you refuse those who want to enter, by standing in the doorway and blocking the entry against them.
You travel over land and sea to win one single convert. Then you go to great lengths to teach them, but with what results? You make the convert twice as much a child of hell as you yourselves are! You do not lift one finger to help produce character or humility or holiness. You turn your converts into prisoners of laws and legalities, but you don’t set them free so they can experience the grace of God.
Woe to you, spiritual leaders. You are blind guides who cannot lead the blind. That ought to be obvious - those who are without vision cannot help those who lack sight. All of you will stumble and fall into a ditch. You have turned the spiritual revelation from the God of Abraham into a slick religion of your own making.
Why is this true? You announce that if someone swears by the temple, it really means nothing, but if someone makes a pledge by the gold of the temple, it becomes a binding oath. What kind of distortion is that? You are blind fools who do not recognize what you are doing amiss! Ask yourselves, which is greater - the gold, or the temple that sanctifies the gold?
You insist when someone swears by the altar that it means nothing, but if someone vows by the gift on the altar that person is bound by the oath. What is that all about, you blind guides? What makes a gift sacred? The altar or the money on it? Isn’t it obvious that anyone who promises at the altar pledges by the altar and everything on it? It is the same when you swear by heave. You are making a promise by God’s throne and the Holy One who sits there.
That is why I accuse you of turning the revelation of the Spirit into a slick religion. That kind of religion will never save your soul. Only a holy, humble, spiritual faith leads into the kingdom.
Here is something else for you to hear, you who are teachers of the law, you hypocrites. You reduce to a form that which the Lord intends to become a force. I have watched you when you insist that people bring their tithes into the sanctuary. You are very legalistic. You order them to set aside one tenth of their spices, even miniscule amounts of mint, dill and cumin. How does this help anyone to live a holy life? What really matters in the service of God? What makes a difference for living as children of God? What are the essentials of the law? Do you ever ask those questions?
I will answer for you from the word of God. Remember what the prophet Micah wrote? The essentials of the law and of a godly life are faithfulness, justice and mercy. Have you forgotten those virtues altogether? You need to put faithfulness, justice and mercy into practice, without neglecting the lesser concerns of the law. But you seem to be blind as a bat when you strain out a gnat from your bowl of soup, and in the next course swallow a whole camel! That’s why I accuse you of reducing your religion to a form when it ought to become a force. What does the Lord require of you? A life of righteousness and justice, a life of mercy and truth.
There is more that I want you to hear, you teachers of the law. What do you think you are doing when you wash the outside of cups and dishes, but leave the inside full of greed and self-indulgence? What kind of hypocrisy is that? You busy yourselves with externals and neglect the values that can transform your hearts. First wash the inside of the cup and dish, and then the outside will also become clean.
Don’t you understand that everything in life begins from within? Everything originates in your hearts! So, make the heart good, and your life will become good as well. Don’t try so hard to look respectable on the outside. Shift your emphasis to being redeemed from within, and you will certainly be changed. That is what a Spirit filled life is all about.
You teachers of the law, you hypocrites, you remind me of whitewashed tombs in your cemeteries. When you walk through a graveyard you see those tombs painted white and clean on the outside, but what is within? Those graves hold the bones of the dead which are decaying and rotting because of maggots and worms. And you who appear to be so righteous on the outside, are you covering up a heart of deception, wickedness and sin? A respectable exterior is hardly the same as a purified and clean heart.
You teachers of the law, you hypocrites, why do you enshrine the past and ignore the present? You build tombs for the prophets in their honor, and decorate the graves of the righteous. Then you tell everyone: ‘If we had lived in the days of our ancestors, we would never have participated in shedding the blood of the prophets.’
But that is far from the truth. You are actually testifying against yourselves when you attempt to identify with the descendants of those who murdered the prophets. And what is worse, you are completely unconscious of your evil intentions! Why? Because you are even now planning to carry out the same sins that your ancestors committed when they killed the servants of the Lord. You do not believe that the Son of Man is among you! You are, in fact, about to do away with him. You snakes in the grass, you brood of vipers! How will you ever escape the condemnation of God? How can you avoid being damned to hell?
And yet in spite of it all, I continue to send prophets and teachers to you, even though you are following in the footsteps of your predecessors. You will kill and crucify the servants of God, persecute them in your places of worship and drive them from town to town. I am warning you that all the righteous blood that has been shed on earth from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, will fall upon you. Judgment awaits this generation, because you enshrine the past while you ignore the present. For you are about to spill even more blood.
O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you have fallen, and how you have fallen. You kill the prophets and destroy those who are sent to you, but you don’t know how often I have longed to bring your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings. You don’t realize that, do you? You don’t understand why I have come into the world among you, do you? You are stubborn in your hearts and stiff-necked, because you are unwilling to admit that you are blind to the truth. Don’t you realize that you need to repent and come to the light? Don’t you want to enter the Kingdom of God?
Soon it will be too late for you, Jerusalem. The end will come and that means curtains. Your city and all that you cherish within these great walls will be gone, destroyed, left desolate and deserted. Therefore hear this all of you in the city of the King. You will not see me again until you acknowledge me, ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.’ For that is what you will confess and acclaim when the day of the Lord comes.
You can be sure of this - the day of the Lord will come! The kingdom of God will arrive on earth! Yes, it will. And soon.
THE MOUNT OLIVET SERMON
Matthew 24, 25
As we left the temple and were walking up Mount Olivet, we stopped to admire the city and its buildings. We watched as the setting sun bathed Jerusalem in a golden glow. Then Jesus startled us with his words:
“The kingdom of God is near, as I have told you. So take a good look at this city. You see the buildings of Jerusalem there, the temple and the walls. This view will not continue because Jerusalem will be overrun by enemy armies and these buildings will be demolished. All of them. As for the temple, not one stone will be left on another.”
We sat in silence for a while, considering his disturbing words, but they raised numerous questions in our minds, and we started to ask him:
“When will all this happen that you are prophesying? Do you really mean to say that Jerusalem will be destroyed? Even the sacred temple of God? Our holy place of worship? How can this be? You have told us that ‘the Son of Man will return.’ We don’t know what you mean by that? Are you going away? When are you going? Where are you going? Are you coming back? How will we know when you are returning? What signs are we to look for? Will there be any warning? We don’t want you to leave us! We don’t want you to go away!”
The answer Jesus gave us turned into quite a sermon!
“Don’t be disturbed by what I am about to tell you. Remember always that your Father in heaven knows and sees all and is always in control. You need to trust my Father always, but you need to prepare yourselves for what will come to pass. Live with hope and expectation, and believe in the certain coming of the eternal kingdom!
You are asking me about signs? Well, here is what you may expect as time is coming to an end. To begin with, look out for those who want to deceive you. They will claim to be the Messiah and use my name. They will cause people to go astray. Don’t believe any of them. Others will turn out to be false teachers, and they will also succeed to mislead hose who are gullible. These suave and persuasive speakers will insist that their teaching is new and exciting, but they are dangerous because they will lead you bring you to disaster. As I have told you before, you will know them by their fruit.
You will also hear about wars, escalating violence and ever more rumors of wars. Do not be alarmed when fighting increases throughout the earth. The news stories of many horrors will not end, for nation will rise against nation and then you will hear about famines, plagues, poverty and great distress. Expect there to be also earthquakes, typhoons and hurricanes that cause destruction and devastation in many places near and far away. These are only the beginning of the birth pains.
Expect also to hear about many who believe in me who will be persecuted, tortured and put to death. My disciples will be hated and hunted everywhere. Because of continuous harassment many believers will deny me. They will turn away from the faith. Even some whom you thought to be followers will betray you, and will come to hate you. Human nature is capable of great evil.
This is also a time when false religions will flourish. Sects and cults will deceive many. You will also notice an increase of wickedness, evil and greed on the earth. As a result the love of many will grow cold! But I give you my promise that all who remain steadfast and true to the end will be saved.
There is still more. This gospel of the kingdom must be preached in the whole world. Missionaries will reach to the ends of the earth with the good news, since the good news is for all people, every nation in every continent. When this objective has been reached, the end will come!
Now here is another sign. Look for ‘the abomination that causes desolation’ to stand in the holy place. That is when you know that the time is near. Do you understand what this ‘abomination of desolation’ means? The prophet Daniel speaks of this desecration of the holy. That is what you are to look for, because that will happen..
What then? Then let those who are in Judea run to the mountains. Yes, run for your life. If anyone is on the roof of a house, don’t even take the time to come down and get your valuables. You won’t be able to take anything with you. In an emergency if you are out in a field, don’t even grab a coat or anything else. This will be a terrible time for pregnant women and nursing mothers. Pray that your flight will not take place in the cold of winter, or when roads will be grid-locked and you cannot move. I warn you that a time of great tribulation and turmoil is coming. The world has never seen anything like that, and it will never see anything like it again.
I assure you, that if those evil days not limited by God, no flesh will survive the holocaust! But for the sake of the chosen people, those days will be cut short by your Father who is in heaven.
Then if someone spreads a rumor, ‘Look, here is the Messiah!’ or, ‘There he is,’ don’t believe it. Fake Messiahs and false prophets will appear to lead many astray. They will perform impressive signs and wonders. These attempts are aimed at persuading you, even if possible to destroy the faithful. I am revealing all this ahead of the times, so that you may be prepared.
Therefore if you hear something like this: ‘Look, out in the desert, there he is.’ Don’t go there to search. The Son of Man will not be there. Or if someone declares, ‘Look, there he is - he is in that holy place,’ don’t believe that either. When the Son of Man comes everyone will know, because all will see him. Just as lightning flashing in the sky from east to west is impossible to miss! Like they say, ‘wherever birds of prey gather, there you will find a carcass.’ Yes, you will.
Now, immediately following such world-wide distress look for more signs: even the sun will be darkened and the moon will not give light. Stars fall from the sky and heavenly bodies will shoot everywhere. Still you need not be afraid, even though everything which seemed to be secure turns into chaos. Don’t be traumatized. God is always in control. Always.
Never forget that before the world can blow itself to pieces, I will come to put an end to the confusion, to increasing danger, devastation and destruction. You will know when that time is close, for you will see the sign of the Son of Man in the sky. Every living person on the earth will be surprised and taken aback. Many will be distressed and ashamed. Some will weep as they watch the Son of Man coming on the clouds with power and great glory. With a loud trumpet blast he will send his angels far and wide to gather the chosen from the ends of the earth.
Now take a lesson from the fig tree. As soon as you observe its twigs growing tender and leaves forming, you know that summer is coming. So, when you discover these signs which I have described to you, you know the time is now. It’s like when you’re expecting guests to arrive, and they’re already at your door. I promise you that the chosen people will not pass away until all these events have been fulfilled. Mark my words because heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.
When will all this take place? I cannot tell you because the Son of Man does not know, only the Father knows. Don’t be taken in by doomsday tellers because no one can reveal the day or hour, not even the angels of heaven.
But you can expect something else. You have heard about the great flood long ago, when the Lord informed Noah about a coming disaster. Noah was instructed to build an ark and only Noah and his family escaped the deluge and were saved. What do you think it was like in those days before the flood? While Noah was building the ark, people paid no attention to him. They acted disinterested. They went on eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage as always. They enjoyed their lives until everything stopped on the day Noah entered the ark. The rains came down hard and even then people never thought this would cause a major flood, or that the waters would sweep them all away.
That is exactly how it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. People will be busy living, working, and doing whatever they enjoy doing. They do not expect the kingdom of God to interfere. But as two men are working in a field, one will be taken and the other will be left. As two women are busy shopping, one will be saved and the other will not.
That is why I tell you now: be ready, be aware always. Watch every day. Why? Because you do not know the day or the hour when the Lord will arrive. The coming of the Lord will surprise the world because it is totally unexpected. Look at it this way - it’s like a robber who sneaks into a house to steal what he can. If you anticipate a break-in, you alert the police, and they will be sitting around the corner, waiting for the burglar to make his move. But if you don’t know when a thief plans to rob you, you are in deep trouble.
So always be ready, because I will come at that moment when you don’t anticipate any interruption. Who do you suppose is like a faithful and wise person whom the owner puts in charge of his business when he goes away? It will certainly be well for those whom the owner finds faithfully at their job when he returns. They will be commended, and may even be promoted!
So, don’t become faithless like those who give up hope in the coming of the Lord. Someone like that is looking for an excuse to party. They want to go out drinking and playing and have a good time on the town. And these party-seekers, you know what they will do? They want to persuade others to join them: ‘You know, it’s going to be a long time before the Lord will return,’ they say. ‘Believe me, a very long time. Look at the centuries that have passed and where has he gone all this time? He’s left us here, and who knows whether he will ever come back? Trust me, if he ever returns, it certainly won’t be in our time. Come on and let’s have some fun and live a little.’
Now, listen. I will return when people are not expecting me, and it will not be a pleasant hour for those who don’t really believe in the coming of the kingdom anyhow. I warn you - no one will be excused from the judgment. Everyone will have to give an accounting. And those who have lived for pleasure, will receive the same portion as the hypocrites. They will be in great danger and distress. There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
Do you realize that I am allowing you to peak behind the curtain that hides the future? I assure you that after the end times, there will be a judgment for all people of earth! I weigh my words carefully. The kingdom of God will put an end to human folly and sin. The kingdom of God will inaugurate a holy life of justice and truth, of mercy and peace and love.
And now that I’ve answered some of your questions, I will close with three parables about the kingdom of God. These stories are not only about the end. They are also about the now - how you are to live in these days. These parables will help you to prepare in the right way for the kingdom!
Here is the first story. The kingdom of God is like ten bridesmaids who are waiting for the bridegroom to arrive. He is coming to take them to the wedding. Now, five of these girls are foolish and five are wise. All of them have taken their lamps, but the wise ones brought extra oil with their lamps, just in case. The foolish ones didn’t do that. The bridegroom has kept them waiting quite a while, and all the girls fell asleep.
Then at midnight someone sees the bridegroom and cries out: “The bridegroom is here! Wake up, everybody. Get up, come out to meet him.”
The bridesmaids wake up and trim their lamps. But it doesn’t take long for the foolish girls to realize that they have a problem. Their lamps are burning low and they’re about to go out. They turn to those girls who brought extra supplies: “Give us some of your oil. Please! Our lamps are going out.”
“No, we can’t do that,” they answer, “because there will not be enough for all of us. Why don’t you go and see if you can buy some oil somewhere?”
Now, while the thoughtless ones go out looking, the bridegroom arrives. The bridesmaids who are ready go with him. The wedding is just about to begin, and the door is shut.
Some time later, the thoughtless ones show up and knock on the door: “Sir, Sir,” they cry, “open the door! We’re here for the wedding. Let us in!” The bridegroom himself comes to the door. “You’re too late,” he says. “The ceremony is over. You can’t participate in the party now. Who are you, anyway? I don’t know you people.”
Do you understand this first parable? Do you realize why I tell you to watch for the coming of the Son of Man? Be ready always, because you know neither the day nor the hour when the kingdom arrives. Those who are wise and discerning disciples will prepare themselves for the kingdom now.
Here is another parable, also about the kingdom. A man is going on a journey and he calls his servants together before he leaves. He gives each some valued gold coins from his estate and informs them that he will return eventually. Now he does not give to each the same amount, but everyone receives according to his or her ability. One obtains five coins, another two and a third has one. Then the master leaves on his trip.
After what seems like a long time he returns. The servants are expected to report to him what they have done with the coins while he has been away.
Now the servant who received five gold coins invested them. He did so well that he showed his master ten coins. “Sir,” he said, “you entrusted me with five gold pieces, and I have gained five more.”
“Well done,” said the master. “You are a good and faithful servant. Since you have been responsible for a few things, I will put you in charge of many things. This will be your reward - come and share my happiness.”
The next servant who received two gold pieces also doubled his. “Sir,” he said, “you entrusted me with two gold pieces, and I have gained two more.” “Well done,” said the master. “You are a good and faithful servant. Since you have been responsible for a few things, I will put you in charge of many things. This is also your reward, so come and share my happiness.”
Now the last one who had received one gold coin, dug a hole in the ground and buried the money. He also reported to the master. “Sir,” he said, “I know the kind of person you are. You are demanding and strict. You harvest where you have not sown and you gather where you have not scattered any seed. So I was afraid, Sir, of what you might do if I lost this gold piece. I did not want to lose it. No, I dug a hole in the ground and hid it away. So here I am returning it to you. It belongs to you, Sir.”
“You are an evil person,” said the master. “And furthermore, you are also lazy. So you think that you understand me and you know my character? You believe that I harvest where I have not sown and gather where I have not scattered? If you think this about me, why did you not invest what I gave you? Why did you bury it for no purpose? You should have been able to get some return on it with interest.”
The master was not finished with that servant yet. He told someone: “Take his gold piece from him and give it to the one who has ten.”
“But why should I do that?” the servant asked. “He already has ten!”
“Of course he has,” answered the master, “the truth is that those who have will be given more, for they will be blessed with abundance. But those who have not, even what they think they own will be taken away from them. Put that worthless servant outside. He will go into the darkness. Yes, I tell you there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”
This is another parable about the return of the master and about the kingdom. You see, it is not about money. It is a story about investing your lives for the kingdom, right now!
Here is the last of my parables. When the Son of Man returns in power and glory, he will bring all the angels with him. He will sit on his throne and judge everyone in the world. As nations will be gathered in front of him and he will separate the people, just as you have seen a shepherd separate his sheep from the goats. He will place the sheep at his right and the goats at his left.
Then the King will address those on his right like this: “Come, you who are the blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the creation. Why? Because I was hungry and you gave me something to eat. I was thirsty and you brought me something to drink. I was a stranger and you invited me in. I needed clothing and you provided for me. I was sick and you cared for me. I was in prison and you came to visit me.”
Then those who are righteous will answer him, “Lord, when did we see you hungry and gave you something to eat? When were you thirsty and we brought you something to drink? When were you a stranger and we invited you into our homes? And when were you in need of clothes and we provided for you? When did we see you sick and cared for you? And when were you in prison and we came to visit you there?”
And the King will reply, “Truly I tell you, whatever you have done for the least of those who are my brothers and sisters, you have actually done for me.”
Then he will turn to those who are on his left and say, “Depart from me, for you are not blessed but cursed! You will be sent into eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. Why? Because I was hungry and you did not give me food, I was thirsty and you brought me nothing to drink, I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes but you did not give me anything, I was sick and you did not care, and neither did you visit me in prison.”
And they will reply, “But Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty? When were you a stranger? Or when did we see you in need of clothing? When were you sick or in prison and we failed to visit you?”
He will answer: “It’s as simple and as profound as this: whatever you failed to do for the least of those who are my brothers and sisters, you failed to do for me.”
I warn you that those who fail to love God and their neighbor as themselves will go away into eternal punishment. But I also promise you that the righteous who live what they profess to believe, will enter into eternal life!
Receive these words that I tell you in parables of the kingdom. The Son of Man will come again, just as the bridegroom appears unexpectedly to take the bridesmaids to the wedding. Just as the master who has gone on a long journey, returns to settle accounts with his servants. When the Son of Man comes in his glory, there will be many surprises. Because the day of the final judgment will bring a separation between the righteous and the unrighteous. Blessed are the poor in spirit, the meek, the hungry and the thirsty, the merciful and the pure in heart for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. By the mercy of the King, all who believe will receive eternal life!
THE WAY OF THE CROSS
Matthew 26,27
The day after we had our talk from Mount Olivet we were in the village of Bethany. A friend named Simon invited us for dinner. As we were reclining around the table, a woman came up behind Jesus carrying a flask. She took off the stopper and poured the contents on his head. A wonderful aroma filled the air, but some people were bothered because this perfume was expensive.
“Why was all this perfume squandered?” one wondered. “This fragrance could have been sold and the money given to the poor!” another contributed. “This whole thing is wasteful,” grumbled Judas.
Jesus looked around at everyone, and then pointing to her, asked: “Why are you criticizing this woman? Why are you so concerned? Are you questioning her motives? And why are you disturbed about the poor? The poor you will always have with you, but you will not always have me. She has given me a beautiful gift. Do you know why? She has prepared me for my burial! That is why she has anointed me. I assure you that when the good news of the kingdom will be proclaimed in all the world, what this woman has done will be remembered. People will recall her gift of kindness.”
After dinner we asked Jesus about his plans for the next day. “Tomorrow is Passover as you know. Where should we prepare for the Passover, so that we can celebrate it? We need to decide - something.”
“Go into town,” Jesus answered, “and you will see a man standing by the door of a large house. Go up to him and tell him, ‘The Teacher announces that his time is near. You have a large room in your house, don’t you? The Teacher asks whether he can keep the Passover there with his disciples?’”
It all worked out as Jesus expected. The next day we kept the Passover in the upper room of that man’s house. But at one point during the evening Jesus interrupted the festivities with an announcement.
“I must tell you something, something that will happen soon. One of you will betray me.” We were stunned. “Surely not me,” gasped James. “N-n-not m-me,” stuttered Thomas. “I will never do that,” stated Peter. “Not me either,” asserted Judas. We all objected. “Who is it?” asked John.
“It is the one who puts his hand in the dish with me.” But that was hardly a clue since we all dip into the common dish. “The Son of Man will go as it is written about him. But how terrible it will be for the one who betrays the Son of Man. I tell you solemnly, his judgment will be relentless. It would be better for him if he had never been born!”
Judas mumbled again, “It‘s not me,” and with that he left the room. We thought that as our treasurer Jesus asked him to go and pay some bills. After he had gone, Jesus took the unleavened bread and offered thanks to God. But he gave new meaning to our eating of the matzo. He broke it, passed it around and said: “Take and eat, for this is my body which is broken for you. Yes, my body - for you!”
With the next drink from the cup Jesus spoke of something very strange. Far different from anything we had ever heard during Passover. “Drink from this cup, all of you. This is my blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. Yes, drink from this cup of salvation.” Quietly, solemnly, we passed the cup around the table. My blood of the new covenant? What did he mean?
Then Jesus added: “Truly I tell you that I will not have the fruit of the vine until the day when we drink it anew in the kingdom. When the kingdom of my Father comes, everything will be fulfilled!” It was very quiet around the table.
“I need to warn you about something else, and you will not like what I am going to say. Tonight you will all fall away on account of me. I know you don’t believe that. You can’t imagine that is possible for you, my disciples. But it is written: ‘I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.’ The Scriptures will be fulfilled. You will desert me. I am the good shepherd and I will lay down my life for the sheep.
But there is more. I lay down my life, and I will take it up again. My Father has given me this authority. After I have risen from the dead, I will go ahead of you into Galilee.”
“Lord,” said Peter, and he was emphatic about it, “even if all the others fall away, I won’t. I will never do anything like that. I swear to you I will be true. You can count on me.”
“I assure you, Peter, this very night before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times.”
“Disown you? How can you even think that? Three times? You’re wrong about this. I will never betray you. Not even once!
“Yes, you will,” he said. “No, I won’t. I will not. Maybe some others will lose their faith, but not me. I’m not going to be guilty of anything like that.”
“Yes, you will,” he repeated. “No I won’t. I know myself.”
“No, Peter, you don’t know yourself. Before the rooster crows twice, you will deny me three times.” “No, I will never do that.” “Yes, you will.”
“I’m not a quitter. I’m a believer. I’m an apostle. I’m loyal. I always have been, I always will be. Even if I have to die with you, I’ll never reject you.” We all chimed in. We, all of us, promised to be loyal -always!
As we left the room some of us were still protesting. We made our way to the garden of Gethsemane. Jesus took James and John and Peter with him and told them: “My soul is overwhelmed. I am at the point of death. I really need you to stay here and pray for me. Keep watch with me.”
Jesus went to his knees in prayer. “My Father, if it is possible, take this cup from me.” The sweat was dripping from him. “I don’t want to drink this bitter cup, but I know in my heart what I must pray for. Father, do not remove this cup from me. Help me to endure everything. I ask for strength not to do as I will, but as you will. I give myself to you now.”
When Jesus came looking for us, we were all asleep. “Couldn’t you stay awake a little longer? I need you to keep watch with me. I know it is late, but pray for me and for yourselves, so you will not give into temptation. I know you’re all tired. Oh, the spirit is willing, but the flesh is so weak.”
He prayed again. And then a third time. We kept falling asleep. Not one of us was able to stay awake. Then just before dawn he woke us up. “Get up now. The moment has come. The Son of Man will be delivered into the hands of sinners. The one who has betrayed me has just entered the garden.”
We were surprised to see Judas accompanied by armed men. We watched as he walked to Jesus, kissed him on the cheek and said: “Greetings, rabbi.”
“Friend,” Jesus answered, looking him in the eyes, “you have come here to betray me. Do what you came to do.” Judas motioned for the troops to arrest Jesus, but suddenly Peter grabbed a sword and cut off a soldiers’ ear.
“Put that sword away,” Jesus commanded. “Everyone who draws a sword will die by the sword. Violence will not stop violence. Do you not realize that even in this moment I can call on the Father and he will give me thousands of angels to defend me? The Father is always with me. Your sword is not the answer. Put it away. But the Scriptures will be fulfilled.”
He turned to the wounded soldier, restored the man’s ear and said, “No more pain for you.” But no one moved. So Jesus asked the armed men: “Am I leading a rebellion? Why have you come out here with swords and clubs? To take me into custody? Every day I was in the temple teaching but you did not arrest me. This is happening to fulfill the prophets’ words.”
We realized that the situation was hopeless! That is why we fled the scene. We deserted him. Exactly as he foretold. And before the rooster crowed three times that very dawn, as the trial of Jesus was taking place, down there in the courtyard Peter denied the Lord three times.
Jesus was brought before the nation’s powerful ruling body, the Sanhedrin. The high priest that year was Caiaphas. He had called a meeting hurriedly, even while it was still night. They voted to enter into session and started asking Jesus many questions. Witnesses were brought in to make accusations, but Jesus never answered anyone. He kept silent. At last Caiaphas had had enough. He wanted a judgment, so he walked up to Jesus, who was standing between two guards.
“You have refused to speak,” he said in a loud voice. “I demand in the name of God that you now answer my questions. I will put you under oath before the living God. You realize that under oath you must tell this court who you are. If you decline to answer you will be breaking the law of God. And if you will be considered guilty and condemned I now put you under a sacred oath before God and command you to tell us: Are you the Messiah, the Son of God?”
Jesus looked straight at him before answering clearly: “It is as you say. I am the Messiah, the Son of God. And I assure you that after this, you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of God, coming on the clouds of heaven.”
“Blasphemy!” cried Caiaphas. “That is enough. It is blasphemy. We don’t need any more witnesses.” He addressed the Sanhedrin: “You have heard this sacrilege. What is your verdict?” He ripped his clothing as a gesture of repentance and dismay. “Death! Our verdict is death,” they cried. “He must die for this blasphemy.”
Then they blindfolded Jesus, surrounded him and spit in his face, struck him with their fists and taunted him: “Now prophesy to us, you Messiah, you Son of God. Who hit you? Who?: You don‘t know, do you?” They kept up this barrage without mercy.
Early that morning members of the Sanhedrin took Jesus to be judged by Pilate, the Roman governor, because only the Romans have the power to carry out the death sentence. And Caiaphas wanted his death. The trial before Pilate did not proceed well. There was more flogging and beating. The soldiers draped a garish robe over him, forced a mock crown made of thorns on his head causing blood to flow, and ridiculed him as ‘the king of the Jews.’
But Pilate insisted to the crowd that he could find no fault in Jesus. So he decided to follow a custom at our Passover, to release a prisoner. He would give the people a choice: a Jewish militant named Barabbas who was brought from prison to the trial and Jesus. The people chose Barabbas, and the governor released him.
Pilate realized he was getting nowhere with this trial. The governor’s wife even sent him a message. He read the note: “Don’t have anything to do with this man who is standing trial before you. He is innocent. I’ve had a dream last night and it really disturbed me. I couldn’t sleep any more. You must set this man free, because he is not guilty.”
So Pilate tried again to release him, but it was too late. The Roman governor was weak and he capitulated. “I am innocent of this man’s blood,” he announced as he literally washed his hands publicly. “This is now your responsibility, not mine,” he cried out to the Jewish leaders.
Then Jesus was taken away to be crucified. He had to carry a cross through the narrow streets of Jerusalem to a place called Golgotha. He was so exhausted from the beatings that he collapsed more than once on the city streets. The centurion in charge ordered a man out of the crowd to carry the cross. His name was Simon.
Outside the walls of Jerusalem they came to this place called Golgotha.
There they nailed Jesus to the cross, but he did not cry out in spite of the excruciating pain. He was put on display, while above his head a sign was nailed which read: This is Jesus, the King of the Jews.
The soldiers threw dice to decide which one of them would get his robe. It was the only thing Jesus owned in the world. He hung there on the cross in agony and pain, exposed to all who came to watch. The accusations, defamations and abuse never stopped. Jesus heard it all. They ridiculed him, demeaned him, taunted him. “If you are the Messiah of Israel, why don’t you show us? Why don’t you prove it to us right now? Come down from the cross! Demonstrate your power. Let’s see if you can do that.
You say that you will rebuild the temple in three days? Really? How are you going to do that if you can’t even climb down from there? If you are so high and mighty, give us some evidence! This is as good a time as any. You will not have another chance, you know.
You say that you trust in God? All right, if you trust in God, why don’t you ask him to rescue you? Are you really supposed to be the Son of God? Show us. Seeing is believing, you know. We’ll wait. If you can convince us, we will believe.
Is God with you? We’ve heard you say that too. Do you mean that God is not with us? God forbid! Well, if God is with you, this is your opportunity to prove it. It will all be over for you soon, you pretender, you false Messiah! This is your last chance, you self-appointed Son of the most High God. Do something. Anything. You who saved others, you can’t even save yourself!” Even while they hurled insults at him, Jesus prayed for them: “Father, forgive them! For they don’t know what they are doing.”
There were two criminals crucified with Jesus, one on either side of him. One of them joined in all this mockery. “If you are the Messiah, why don’t you save yourself? And why don’t you save me and my friend over there, too?” The other offender responded to him. “Don’t you fear God? You and I have received the same fate as he. We are all going to die soon, and we deserve it. We are guilty, you know, but this man has done nothing wrong. Can’t you see that? He is not a criminal!”
Then that same wrongdoer turned toward Jesus. He must have read the inscription over Jesus’ head. Maybe he was watching as Jesus took the barrage of suffering, cruelty, insults, name-calling and abuse. “Jesus,” he began, “Remember me when you come into your kingdom. I believe in you and your kingdom. Please remember me!” He believes in Jesus! Even though they are all dying, he expresses faith in the kingdom of God. Is he the only one among all those who are at the cross? The only one when even his disciples have forsaken the Lord? Jesus turned his head toward the man. He spoke with great effort as he struggled breathing: “I promise today, yes this very day, you will be with me in paradise!”
Jesus endured the agony of the cross for three hours. Once he cried out: “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” Some people thought that he was asking for Elijah to come, because he said in Aramaic: “Eli, Eli.” He was not calling for Elijah but for God, his Father. They failed to understand. “Let’s see if Elijah will come to save him.” A soldier lifted up a spear with a sponge dipped in vinegar. Jesus accepted it and moistened his lips.
Shortly after that Jesus spoke his last words: “It is finished!” It was as if he was saying: I have fulfilled what I set out to achieve. My life is ended, my ministry is complete, the sacrifice for the redemption of the world has been accomplished. The atonement is made. The ransom for sin has been paid. And now the door to the Father’s house is open.
For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son that whoever believes in him will not perish, but may have eternal life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through him may be saved!
RESURRECTION AND PURPOSE
Matthew 27. 28
Joseph of Arimathea, a rich man who was a member of the Sanhedrin, had become a silent follower of Jesus. After Jesus died on the cross, Joseph went to the governor and asked to take his body down. He received permission to place the corpse in his tomb. Together with the mother of Jesus, the mother of James and John, and Mary Magdalene, they wrapped the body in clean linen cloth and placed it in Joseph’s tomb. It took three men to move a heavy stone to seal the tomb.
But the next day the high priest Caiaphas with some of the Sanhedrin also went to Pontius Pilate. They insisted to the governor that guards be placed at the tomb, since they had heard strange rumors: “This deceiver said, ‘In three days I will rise again,’” they quoted as they informed the Roman governor. Because of these reports they worried that his disciples might steal the body from the tomb and then announce a “resurrection.” They wanted to make sure that no such trickery could be carried out. “Then this latest fraud will be far worse than the first,” they argued.
Pilate didn’t think much of the whole thing, but he gave permission reluctantly: “Take some men and secure the place all you want. Make it as safe as you can. You have my permission. But go away now, because I don‘t want to hear anything more about this unpleasant business.”
Now on the day after the Sabbath, that is on the first day of the week, there was an earthquake in the garden. It happened at dawn and the whole city must have felt the shaking. An angel of the Lord came from heaven and rolled away the huge stone that sealed the tomb. He sat on the stone and his appearance was bright and luminous, white as snow. The guards trembled at the sight of him and fell down on the ground. When they recovered, without once looking back, they ran for their lives.
Just then Mary Magdalene with some other women arrived in the garden. When they spied the angel, they were also frightened. He tried to calm their fears: “Don’t be afraid. I will not harm you. You are not in any danger. I know why you have come here. You are searching for Jesus who was crucified. If you want to examine the tomb, take a look, but he is not there. Believe me, he is risen from the dead, just as he promised you. He is alive! Now you must inform his disciples. They need to hear the good news right away. Tell them what I have disclosed to you.”
As the angel vanished, the women hurried from the tomb. They were still afraid because of the angel’s appearance, and because the body was missing and the tomb was empty. These strange events disturbed them. They had not seen the body as they expected to, and suddenly Jesus himself met them on that road. They saw him and were startled, amazed!
“Good morning,” he announced. “I am truly alive. I have risen from the dead. It is true, just as you have heard from the angel. You see me with your own eyes!” They came and knelt on the ground, clasped his feet and worshipped him. They were overjoyed by what God had done, thrilled at the amazing triumph of the risen Lord! “Do not be afraid,” Jesus repeated. “Go speak to my disciples of what you have experienced. Yes, I am alive! Tell my friends that they will soon see me also.” And with that he was gone.
About the same time as the women went off to tell the disciples, the guards came into the city to report what had happened to them at the tomb. When Caiaphas heard their stories, he decided at once to pay off the guards. He gave them a large sum of money and said: “If anyone asks you what happened this morning at the tomb, you are to say ‘nothing really happened, nothing!’ Tell them that the disciples of this deceiver came during the night and stole the body. They wanted to prove that he had risen from the dead. He has not. So they removed the body somewhere, and the truth of the matter is that we were asleep when all this happened. When we woke up, the body was gone and the tomb was empty.”
The guards objected: “But we cannot say that we were asleep on duty. Not on duty, Sir. We were not asleep, you know.”
Caiaphas was firm: “No, I don’t know. Look at the money we just gave you. Count it. Is that enough to keep you quiet? It ought to be. I forbid you to say anything to anyone about this money. You don’t want to incriminate yourselves! Stick to your story. If your report that the disciples stole the body while you were asleep gets to Pontius Pilate, that will satisfy him. Rome has no interest to investigate this matter any further, and you will be out of trouble. Do you understand me? I hope so. You can go now.”
The report of the guards sleeping on duty was widely circulated in Jerusalem and beyond. No one questioned ‘the official version of the missing body and the empty tomb.’
Then the women reported to the apostles that they had seen the Lord! We were dumbfounded. We tried to believe it, but some of us had doubts. All we could think of was that Jesus had been crucified. He was dead. His body wrapped up in the tomb. How could he be alive? What had the women experienced? Was this a figment of their imagination? A hallucination? Maybe a delusion?
Later that evening our questioning ended. Jesus paid us a surprise visit! Suddenly he appeared in our room and announced: “Peace be with you!” We were shocked to see Jesus! No words can express our amazement. What was going on here? Can this be for real? We were not expecting a resurrection, even though Jesus had foretold these events! And then he began to help us to believe.
“I don’t blame you, my friends, because you are having doubts. You think maybe you are seeing a ghost? You are asking how it is possible for me to be alive? You reason that no one in the world has ever returned from the dead, so this is out of the question. Let me ask you something: Is anything impossible for God? Is anything too hard for God?
I taught you to have faith in God. Even a little faith, like a grain of mustard seed will help you to believe. What you are experiencing is not a figment of your imagination. It is not a hallucination. I am alive, thanks be to God. This victory is given by my Father.
Peace be with you. I realize you may have doubts, but look at me. I have hands and feet. Touch me and see. These are my hands, these are my feet. A spirit does not have flesh and bones as I have. Calm your fears. Do not doubt. Trust your eyes, your hands, your hearts. My resurrection is not a metaphysical apparition. I am not trying to deceive the gullible.
All right, I will show you something to help you believe. Please pass me a piece of that fish. Thank you. I am going to eat this in front of you! I am taking a bite. This is not a trick. I don’t like tricks as you know. I am chewing this food. When I was with you, I told you before we came to Jerusalem, what would happen to me. The rejection, the suffering and the crucifixion. I also prophesied that my Father would raise me from the dead. Do you remember any of the Scriptures about the Messiah who was to come? Moses wrote about me in the law and David in the Psalms. Prophets like Isaiah, Jeremiah, Zechariah announced that the Messiah would suffer. And the Scriptures also foretell my resurrection from the dead. I assure you that everything that is written has been fulfilled. I have not come to destroy the law, but to complete it. I am alive and I will not die again. I am the resurrection and the life. And you, whom I have chosen as my disciples are to be my witnesses of all that you have seen and heard.
There is more. Because I live you will live also. You will have eternal life, I promise you. I am the first to rise, but a day will come when all in the graves will hear my voice and will come forth. The good will rise to eternal life. The evil to condemnation. Do you believe that you will live forever? You will. I have the keys of death and Hades. The old order will pass away. The new will come - the kingdom of God. I am the resurrection and the life!”
For the next forty days Jesus appeared to us. He gave us many convincing proofs in Galilee and with every revelation we grew stronger. And then these meetings came to an end. The last time Jesus talked with us was in Jerusalem.
“I have a few things to say to you. To begin with, do not leave Jerusalem just yet. Wait here for the Holy Spirit who will appear to you. I spoke about the Spirit at the Passover and told you that he will come. Now the time is almost here.. My Father and I will send the Spirit and make our home in you. The Spirit will remind you of everything I have taught you, and you will bear witness to the good news you have heard! When John the Baptist was at the Jordan he baptized with water, but you are to be baptized with the Holy Spirit. Wait for that presence. It will not be long!”
But we were full of questions. “Has the time come, Lord, when you will establish again the kingdom to Israel? Is this the time? Are we finally to be free? Has the hour come to crown you king, now that we know you are the Messiah? Will you announce in Jerusalem the kingdom of your Father?”
“No, this is not the time. The kingdom will not come in glory and power. This is not how the kingdom will be established. Remember what I have taught you. The kingdom is in your midst! It is present whenever even a cup of cold water is given in my name. It is whenever you do the will of God! The kingdom begins like a small seed at work in the world, and the good news must be proclaimed to the ends of the earth. Then will come the end to Satan and his domain of evil, wickedness and sin.
You want to know when that will take place? It is not for you to know the times or seasons. But believe me, the kingdom of righteousness and peace will surely triumph. Until then I promise that you will receive power when the Holy Spirit is present. Wait here for the Spirit to guide you, for then you will witness first to Jerusalem and in Judea and even to the lowly Samaritans. Eventually you will cover the Roman empire, and in due course proclaim good news to the ends of the earth.
All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. I expect you to make disciples of all nations, to baptize in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach everyone to obey everything I have commanded you. Encourage them to enter at the small gate and walk the narrow way, for that is the way I also walked. Take heart because I assured you that the gates of hell will not prevail against you. I promise to be with you always, even to the end of the age. Of this you may be certain!”
And then we watched as Jesus was taken up into heaven. We stood there spellbound, looking up until we lost sight of him, when suddenly two angels dressed in white appeared from out of nowhere.
“Why are you men of Galilee standing here, gazing at the sky? Jesus has been taken from you and he has ascended into heaven. One day he will return the same way as you have seen him go. For now you need to believe his promises and live by them, for the Lord will surely establish the kingdom of God when all has been said and done.”
“The Spirit and the bride say, ‘Come!’ And let those who hear say, ‘Come!’ Let those who are thirsty come; and let all who will take the free gift of the water of life.” We know that Jesus himself testifies to these things and says, ‘Yes, I am coming soon.’
